Hogs Sweep Doubleheader Against Drake

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas women’s tennis team (3-1) kicked off its home season with two sweeps over Drake (0-4) in a doubleheader on Saturday at Billingsley Tennis Center.

In the opening match, the Razorbacks took the early lead, claiming the doubles point. Carolina Gomez and Katarina Pavlechova teamed up for the first time this spring to earn a 6-2 win on court two, while No. 67 Anet Koskel/Grace O’Donnell cruised to a 6-3 win on court one, clinching the doubles point. Junior Katie Ferguson and freshman Jimena Gomez’s match resulted in a 6-3 win.

Ferguson initiated the scoring in singles play for the Hogs, earning her first win of the season in straight sets. No. 72 C. Gomez started out strong again with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win at the No. 1 position for Arkansas. In her first home match as a Razorback, Pavlechova quickly followed with a 6-2, 6-0 victory of her own, to clinch the match for the Hogs. O’Donnell and Koskel both won in straight sets to extend the lead for Arkansas. To close the match, Arkansas freshman Jimena Gomez Alonso beat Shiori Takeda 6-2, 7-5 on court five.

The Hogs carried their momentum over into the second match of the day, grabbing the doubles point once again with victories on courts two and three. Ferguson and J. Gomez struck first with a 6-2 victory, followed by a 6-4 win by C. Gomez and Pavlechova to take the first point. No. 67 Koskel and O’Donnell’s match went unfinished with the Razorback duo ahead 5-4.

In singles play, Koskel won her second match of the season, claiming a 6-1, 6-1 victory, while C. Gomez earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 1 position. Ferguson finished the match off with a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court six to close out the sweep for the Hogs.

The Razorbacks continue their season in Lawrence, Kan., next weekend as they travel to face Wisconsin on Saturday, February 8 and Kansas on Sunday, February 9.
