Hogs Sweep Rebs for 16th Win of the Season
Friday the 13th proved to be no unlucky day for the No. 12 Razorback volleyball team as Arkansas swept Ole Miss in straight sets.
It marked the team’s 14th consecutive victory and 16th overall on the season. The Hogs are now 6-0 in conference play, one of only two left standing undefeated along with No. 10 Tennessee.
Graduate outsider hitter Maggie Cartwright had a stellar night for the Razorbacks with a team-high 14 kills on 21 swings for a .619 hitting percentage. She also added five service aces, a new career high.
Senior Taylor Head tallied her third straight double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs, and junior libero Courtney Jackson had a team-high 13 digs and two service aces.
Set 1
Arkansas came out firing immediately and grabbed an early 9-3 lead, which was highlighted by back-to-back aces from Cartwright. Ole Miss called time to regroup and came within four shortly after, but the Razorbacks used a 3-0 run to push the score over 20 and went up by eight. Ole Miss tacked on six of the next eight, but a kill by Jill Gillen and ace by Hannah Hogue brought it to set point. The Rebels spoiled it three times, but Cartwright laid down a kill for the 25-21 victory.
Set 2
The Hogs came out blazing in the second and scored six straight points for a 9-2 advantage. Ole Miss found a rhythm from there and limited Arkansas to a point at a time until the Hogs scored a pair off back-to-back Gillen kills and the lead was 15-8 at the media timeout. The Hogs kept their foot on the gas and a kill from Head and another Cartwright ace brought Arkansas to 20 points and sent Ole Miss to a huddle. The Rebs came within seven, but three straight Arkansas points finished off with an ace from Jada Lawson secured the second 25-16 in favor of the home team.
Set 3
Ole Miss brought its best of the night in set three and led through the sixth point, until Arkansas strung together a three-point streak with kills from three different players for the lead. The Rebs got one point back out of a timeout, but Arkansas extended the lead to 11-7 with two Gillen kills and an Ole Miss error. The Rebels didn’t go quietly and took the lead back at 13-12. Arkansas responded with a 3-2 run and went up by two. Once Ole Miss came within one, the Hogs widened the gap with six straight points including two kills apiece from Head and Sania Petties and a Cartwright ace, and it was 23-16 Arkansas. Ole Miss added two more, but a Head kill and a block by Petties and Hogue closed the set 25-18 and secured the sweep.
