Hogs Upset No. 15 Florida State in SEC/ACC Challenge

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Arkansas women’s basketball team (7-1) upset No. 15 Florida State (5-2) in the SEC/ACC Challenge on the road, 71-58. Arkansas earned the win behind outscoring the Seminoles 24-6 in the third quarter. Saylor Poffenbarger broke the school record for individual-game rebounds with 23, surpassing Shelly Wallace who has held the record since Feb.13, 1988. Samara Spencer also earned 1,000 career points in her home state.

In a game that was expected to be a quick one, Florida State did not waste any time, getting right to the lane for a jumper just five seconds into the game. Spencer then got the Hogs on the board with a layup. Both teams hit scoring droughts, as the game was tied at 2-2 three minutes into action, and then Makayla Daniels found a lane for a layup. FSU responded with seven straight points, while Arkansas went 0-for-4 from the field in that stretch. Spencer broke that drought with another layup, and at the media timeout, taken at 4:41, the Seminoles led, 9-6. Carly Keats knocked down a triple and Spencer made two free throws, as the Hogs retook the lead, 11-10, with less than two minutes to play in the quarter. FSU went 0-for-12 from the field and went in scoring drought for over two minutes until draining a 3-pointer to take the 13-11 edge after one quarter.

Spencer knocked down a triple on the first play from offense in the second quarter. FSU scored four straight points, and Taliah dug the Hogs out of a two-minute drought by knocking down two free throws. At the media timeout taken with 4:48 left in the second quarter, Arkansas trailed, 21-16. Arkansas went in a scoring drought for nearly four minutes, as FSU was on its 7-0 run, which continued out of the media timeout, but Poffenbarger delivered a 3-pointer. Scott then nailed a jumper, as FSU called a timeout with the Hogs digging into their lead, 26-22, with 2:13 left in the first half. The Hogs continued its 6-0 run, as Scott knocked down a 3-pointer after starting the game 1-for-9 from the field. Poffenbarger then knocked down a triple at the buzzer, as Arkansas took the 28-26 lead going into the locker room. Arkansas ended the quarter on a 12-2 run through the last 3:28 of the quarter.

Scott got the scoring started in the second half with a 3-pointer to reach double digits in scoring in each of her eight first games. Daniels then knocked down a jumper and followed that up with a 3-pointer, as Arkansas kept rolling on an 18-2 run, which started at the end of the second quarter. FSU called a timeout, and the Hogs led, 37-28 with 7:47 left in the third quarter. Out of the timeout, Poffenbarger drained a 3-pointer to extend Arkansas’ lead to 12. During this stretch, Arkansas scored 11 straight points, while FSU was in a drought for over three minutes. FSU got a bucket to break the drought, but Daniels answered with a layup. At the media timeout with 3:40 left in the third quarter, Arkansas led, 46-30. Scott knocked down her third 3-pointer of the game to elevate the Hogs ahead by 19 points. Poffenbarger then followed with her fourth 3-pointer of the game to earn a new career-high from beyond the arc. Arkansas led, 52-32 going into the final quarter.

FSU went on a 6-0 run after knocking down two 3-pointers in under one minute, but Scott answered with a 3-pointer of her own. With 7:27 left in the game, Arkansas had the 60-40 advantage. FSU then went on an 8-0 run and after being in a drought for two minutes, Spencer drained a 3-pointer to surpass 1,000 career points. With three minutes left in the game, Arkansas led 65-48. Dauda came up with two layups, including one while drawing the foul. Although the Seminoles scored 26 points off 57.1 percent shooting in the fourth quarter, the Hogs got the job done in the 71-58 victory.

HOG HIGHLIGHTS

  • Poffenbarger broke the school record for individual-game rebounds with 23, breaking a record that stood for over 35 years. She logged her second double-double of the season behind 13 points and 23 boards. She also logged two assists, two steals and three blocks, while notching a career-high four 3-pointers
  • Spencer became the sixth Hog in the Mike Neighbors era to reach the 1,000-point club. Becoming the 33rd Hog all-time to surpass 1,000 points, Spencer did so behind 15 points off three 3-pointers, while matching a season-high six assists
  • Daniels logged 10 points, six rebounds and two steals
  • Dauda reached six points, six boards and two blocks
  • Emrie Ellis logged three of the team’s nine blocks
  • The Hogs had nine blocks and four steals, while holding FSU to a season-low 58 points
  • Arkansas put up a season-high 13 3-pointers

 

UP NEXT

Arkansas will host the No. 2 Bruins in UCLA on Sunday, Dec. 3 for a 2 p.m. tipoff inside the confines of Bud Walton Arena. The game will be a Red Out, and will be streamed on SECN+.
