FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas is proud to announce former Razorback quarterback Joe Ferguson as the honorary captain for the Arkansas-Southern California football game on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006.

The University of Arkansas Men’s Athletic Department will present an honorary captain for each Fayetteville home game this season. Each honorary captain will be honored prior to the game on the field, recognized on the SmartVision and will accompany the Razorback captains to midfield for the coin toss. The honorary captain will also appear at the Legends Tent presented by Old Spice and Spectrum Brands in the AT&T Trough approximately 90 minutes before game time.

Ferguson lettered for the Razorbacks from 1970-72. A member of the Razorback All-Century team and the All-Decade team of the 1970s, Ferguson passed for 4,431 yards and 24 touchdowns in his career. He also holds the record for the most completions in a game with 31 against Texas A&M in 1971.

Following his Razorback career, Ferguson played in the National Football League with Buffalo, Detroit and Tampa Bay. When he left the Bills in 1985, he was Buffalo’s career leader in seasons played, games, pass attempts, completions, yards and touchdowns.

In 1993, Ferguson was named to the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor.
