José Marin Earns Third SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week Award

FAYETTEVILLE – Maria José Marin received her third SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week accolades following just her fourth collegiate tournament after her performance at the Purdue Puerto Rico Classic. The Cali, Colombia native now has the most SEC Freshman of the Week awards in school history and ties Stacy Lewis with the most in a single season when she earned three weekly awards in 2007-08.

José Marin, who is ranked No. 1 in the Spikemark rankings, bounced back in a major way in the team’s first tournament of the spring, finishing the 54 holes under par for the fourth straight time as a collegiate golfer. She finished with a 1-under 215 (77-71-67) to tie for 16th out of 90 golfers. José Marin’s most impressive round came in the third, in which she tied a career low-round 67 behind a bogeyless round with five birdies and 13 pars. She was able to jump 24 spots on the leaderboard and put the Hogs in a wonderful position to eventually win the team title by one stroke with a 12-under 276 in the third round.

This season, José Marin leads the team with a 69.91 scoring average, nine rounds at par or under and five rounds in the 60s. She is ranked No. 13, according to the World Amateur Golf Rankings and is coming off receiving her second invitation to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, being one of 72 invitees in the world.

Arkansas is coming off winning the Puerto Rico Classic as a team behind a comeback finish, in which the Hogs went from a tie for ninth in the first round to fourth in the second and first after a tournament-low 276 in the third. The Hogs put up a season-low 10-under 854 (293-285-276), with -12 being tied for the 10th lowest round vs. par and tied for the 12th lowest team round (276) in school history.

The Hogs will look to build off the spring opening win, as Arkansas will play at the Moon Golf Invitational at Suntree Golf Club in Melbourne, Florida from Sunday, Feb. 18-20. This marks Arkansas’ third straight year playing in the event hosted by Louisville.
