Juriad Hughes earns long jump bronze at SEC Outdoor
AUBURN – A bronze medal performance by Juriad Hughes in the long jump provided Arkansas with six more team points on the second day of the SEC Outdoor Championships hosted by Auburn.
In four more prelim events, the Razorbacks advanced five individuals in the 100m, 400m, 1,500m and 110m hurdles (2). They join the four entries achieved on Thursday with two each in the 200m and 800m.
Also in action on the final day for Arkansas are Scottie Vines and Cooper Williams in the high jump along with Henry Kiner in the triple jump.
With eight of 21 events scored the Razorbacks have 16 points from two finals and are currently in ninth place. Alabama leads with 43 points over 38 for Florida followed by Tennessee (33.5) and Ole Miss (31.75).
After starting the long jump with a pair of fouls, Hughes had a mark of 24-7 (7.49) to move into seventh place and earn three more attempts. In the fifth stanza, Hughes reached a distance of 25-9.25 (7.85) and moved into second place temporarily.
LSU’s Jordan Turner delivered a mark of 25-11.5 (7.91) to claim the runner-up position and Hughes finished third. Florida’s Temoso Masikane won the event with a leap of 26-3.5 (8.01).
The Razorbacks day started with Jerome Campbell (13.33) and Abdoul Sy-Savane (13.38) both placing second in separate heats of the 110m hurdles to earn automatic qualification to the final. Campbell’s time ranks No. 3 on the UA all-time list while the career best for Sy-Savane ranks No. 4.
Jelani Watkins posted the leading time of 10.06 (+0.4) in the 100m field and was the lone Arkansas sprinter to reach the final. Karabo Letebele (10.23) and Dapriest Hogans (10.26) just missed advancing as the final time qualifier was 10.19 shared by four sprinters with three advancing.
The next best time among the field was 10.16 for Kentucky’s Denzel Simusiala and a 10.18 for LSU’s Jaiden Reid.
In the final 100m heat a pair of Auburn sprinters both ran 10.21. Tyler Davis earned the auto qualifier to the final as the winner of the heat by a 10.203 to 10.209 margin while SEC and NCAA Indoor 60m champion Kanyinsola Ajayi didn’t advance.
Jordan Pierre posted a time of 45.27 to win his heat of the 400m and earn an automatic advancement to the final. A 45.74 for Devyn Wright and 45.79 for TJ Tomlyanovich didn’t advance on time as they placed second and third in separate heats.
Brian Masai led the field in the 1,500m prelims with a time of 3:43.36 while a 3:47.20 for Owan Logorodi placed him fourth in another heat.
