Late Goal Lifts Arkansas Past Florida, 2-1

FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas soccer (6-4-4, 4-1-3 SEC) scored twice in the second half to come from behind and beat Florida (6-3-3, 2-4-2 SEC), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Razorback Field.

The match was headed for a 1-1 draw until freshman MacKenzie Gwin netted the game-winner with just six seconds left and secured three more points for the Hogs.

How It Happened

Headed into today’s match, the Razorbacks were 0-4-0 when opponents score first, and that’s exactly what the Gators did at the 43-minute mark in the first half.

Arkansas answered on the other side of the break in the 56th minute when junior forward Kyndal Ewertz used her shoulder to redirect a corner kick from junior defender Madden McDonald.

The goal was Ewertz’s second in as many matches. She scored the game-winner in Thursday’s match at Tennessee to give the Razorbacks their first road win of the season.

Florida nearly scored its second goal in the 82nd minute when Kyra Taylor took a shot from the top of the penalty box that curled toward the back post and forced goalkeeper Keegan Smith to make an impressive diving save.

The Hogs had what felt like one last chance when a free kick was earned between the 18-yard box and the sideline with under a minute to go. Gwin took the kick but missed her target high and left.

Arkansas won the ensuing goal kick and midfielder Zoe Susi flicked the ball up to Gwin, who turned towards goal and ran about 40 yards, avoided a tackle just outside the 18, and fired from outside the six-yard box with her left foot.

The Hogs edged the Gators 13-12 in shots and Smith made five saves for the second straight match.

Game Notes

  • Arkansas’ home SEC game unbeaten streak was extended to 31 matches, making it six full years since the Hogs last lost a league game at home.
  • Gwin netted her first career game-winner and second goal of the season. She scored her first in the 9-0 win over Little Rock in August.
  • Gwin’s goal is Arkansas’ latest scored this season and the latest game-winner since Bella Field scored with 26 seconds left against Grand Canyon in 2023.
