Lewis, USA Open Strong
DES MOINES, Iowa — Former University of Arkansas All-American Stacy Lewis paced Team USA to a great day one in Solheim Cup action in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday.
Lewis and partner Gerina Piller started strong in the morning foursome alternate ball action. The duo was 2-up at the turn but Team USA struggled on the back nine and Lewis and Piller dropped their match to Karine Icher and Catriona Matthew by one hole.
Team USA trailed 2.5-1.5 after the morning action. The Americans rallied in the afternoon four-ball action. In a four-ball match, teams of two compete head-to-head with each other. Each golfer plays their own ball throughout the round so that four balls are in play. A team’s number of strokes for a given hole is that of the lower scoring team member.
Lewis and Piller defeated Georgia Hall and Charley Hull 2 & 1 as the Americans won all four afternoon contests. Team USA leads the Europeans, 5.5-2.5 after the first day of competition. Play continues throughout the weekend.
