Mateo Leads; Arkansas in 7th at CABO Collegiate

LOS CABOS, Mexico – Playing in one of the toughest fields in college golf, Razorback senior Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira leads the CABO Collegiate – presented by CFO4Life – after round one and Arkansas stands in seventh in the 15-team field. The 13th edition of the CABO is being played for the first time at the Twin Dolphin Club (par 71 – 7.156 yards).

Fernandez de Oliveira fired a 4-under-par 67 and leads by one in a field that has 31 of the top 100-ranked college golfers, including 10 of the top 25 with #1, #1 and #5. Julian Perico shot an even-par 71 in round one to stand in a tie for 11th.

Top-ranked Vanderbilt leads the 15-team field that has 13 of the nation’s top 50 teams. The Commodores fired a 4-under 280 and are four strokes ahead of second place #44 Ole Miss. A trio of teams is tied for third at +4 including #2 Texas Tech, #3 Arizona State and #23 Baylor. Arizona, ranked 19th, sits in sixth and a stroke ahead of #48 Arkansas at +8 (292).

Arkansas got off to a slow start and stood in 12th midway through round one despite Fernandez de Oliveira, who started on hole five, carding birdies on three of his first four holes. Then, after a double bogey by Fernandez de Oliveira on his 11th hole, he rallied and closed his round with three birdies and four pars for his 4-under 67.

Perico was steady throughout the round with two bogeys, two birdies and 14 pars.

Wil Gibson was at +5 through 10 holes, but he finished his round with a birdie and seven pars to stand in a tie for 40th (+4; 75). Segundo Oliva Pinto is tied for 67th (+8) and Manuel Lozada is in 76th (+12).

Also playing is a trio of Razorback individuals. Christian Castillo is tied for 40th (+4), Matthew Griggs is tied for 48th (+5) and Denver Davis is tied for 56th (+6).

Round two of three is set for Monday.
