No. 1 Razorbacks face No. 2 Tigers in LSU Invitational
BATON ROUGE – No. 1 Arkansas competes in the LSU Invitational at Bernie Moore Stadium on Saturday, May 2, with the host Tigers currently ranked No. 2 nationally.
The field of teams in the meet include Florida State, Louisiana Lafayette, McNeese State, New Orleans, Ole Miss, Rutgers, and Tulane. An additional nationally ranked program is No. 19 Ole Miss.

“Overall it’s a good place and it’s easy travel for us to go to Baton Rouge,” noted Arkansas men’s head coach Doug Case. “We’ve gone down there for quite a few years in a row. The track facility is nice, but it can be a little stormy down there this time of the year. Usually we get some good warm weather.
“It’s a one-day meet, which we really like this time of the year, with good competition. We’ll go down there and try run some good races in some good events. The 400m is important for us this weekend.”
Razorback Ernest Cheruiyot will race over 5,000m at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford on Friday evening. On his last west coast visit, Cheruiyot broke the UA record in the 10,000m with a 27:41.59 performance that currently ranks fourth in the nation among collegians.
“The reason we go out there is for the moderate weather,” said Case. “When running those distance races you don’t want it to be 90 degrees or too humid. It’s a great place to go run a 10k or 5k.
“Ernest is a guy who scored in both the 3k and 5k indoors for us, and we look at him outdoors as a potential 5k and 10k scorer at the NCAA meet. It’s an important race but we just need him to get a mark that’s going to be a qualifier for the NCAA West first round. I’m sure he will want to go out there and run really fast.”
Prior to last weeks’ competition, Arkansas ranked No. 2 while LSU was No. 5. Both schools moved to No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, with performances from this past weekend as they each competed at home.
Jelani Watkins will race in the 200m and is joined by teammates Karabo Letebele, Jamarion Stubbs, and Dapriest Hogans in the first section.
The first section of the 400m features Jordan Pierre and Steven McElroy, followed by TJ Tomlyanovich, Zander Cruzan, and Tyrice Taylor in section two. The third section will have Rivaldo Marshall along with Devyn Wright and Julian Carter.
