No. 18 Gomez Alonso Earns Two Ranked Wins in Cary

CARY, N.C. – Carolina Gomez Alonso continued her run at the ITA All-American Championships on Friday with two ranked wins in the singles consolation draw while advancing to the Round of 16.

No. 18 Gomez Alonso opened the day with a matchup against No. 53 Elizabeth Coleman (Duke) in the Round of 32 as the match was moved indoors due to weather. Gomez Alonso secured the first set 6-1 and carried her momentum over into the second set as the junior cruised to another 6-1 victory and a straight-set win over Coleman.

In her Round of 16 qualifying match, Gomez Alonso faced No. 42 Bianca Fernandez (UCLA) with Gomez Alonso claiming the first set 6-3. Fernandez evened the match with a 6-3 victory of her own in the second set while Gomez Alonso took control early in the decisive set en route to a dominating 6-1 win.

Gomez Alonso will be back in action tomorrow against No. 55 Piper Charney (Michigan) in the consolation Round of 16 with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals. All Consolation Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches will be played tomorrow.
