No. 23 Women's Tennis Set for Two SEC Showdowns

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 23 Razorback women’s tennis team (9-0, 3-0) continues play against Southeastern Conference opponents this weekend, hosting No. 9 Vanderbilt (10-1, 2-1) on Friday and Kentucky (9-2, 1-2) on Sunday. Both matches will take place at Arkansas’ Billingsley Tennis Center.

The Razorbacks improved to 9-0 on the season after they defeated Memphis (4-3) and Missouri (4-2) last weekend. Arkansas is off to its best start since 2005 and heads into the weekend as the only remaining undefeated team in the SEC.

A staple for the Hogs in the No. 2 position, freshman Indianna Spink took down Laura Bente of Memphis 6-4, 6-2 and Ellie Wright of Missouri 6-3, 7-5. Both of Spink’s wins helped Arkansas clinch the back-to-back wins against the Hogs’ opponents. For her efforts, Spink earned her third SEC Freshman of the Week honor in just six weeks, announced by the league office on Wednesday.

Arkansas is 5-27 against Vanderbilt in program history and on the hunt for its first win against the Commodores since 2009. Vanderbilt fifth-year senior Christina Rosca opened the season ranked No. 20 in the ITA’s national singles poll. To date, Rosca owns an overall 109-48 singles career record while going a perfect 10-0 thus far this spring season.

The Razorbacks and Wildcats series dates back to 1982-83 and since then Arkansas is 9-23 against Kentucky. The Hogs are looking to end a seven-match losing streak to the Wildcats on Sunday, aiming to claim their first series win since 2013. Wildcat Akvile Paražinskaite leads Kentucky with an 11-0 record on the No. 1 singles court and an 8-0 record on the No. 1 doubles court, paired with rookie Fiona Arrese.

Friday’s match against the Commodores is set to begin at 3 p.m. and Sunday’s match against the Wildcats is set to start at noon. Both matches are available for fans to watch for free, via Playsight.
