ON THIS DAY: #ProHog Cappelen Wins 2013 SEC Title

APRIL 21, 2013 (St. Simons Island, Ga.) – Arkansas’ Sebastian Cappelen shot a 4-under-par 66 in the final round, overcoming a four-stroke deficit, to win the 2013 SEC men’s golf individual championship at Sea Island Golf Club.

Cappelen, a junior at the time, shot 8-under (69-67-66=202) for the three-day tournament, becoming the first Arkansas golfer since Bud Still in 1995 to win the SEC Individual Championship. The Odense, Denmark native only had two bogeys over 54 holes and played the final 40 holes of the tournament without a bogey.

His 202, 54-hole total was an SEC Championship record at the time and still stands as a Razorback record at the SEC Championship. In fact, it is four strokes better than the second-best, Razorback 54-hole score at the event.

Despite winds gusting between 20 and 30 miles per hour during the final round, Cappelen hit every green in regulation and was one of two players to post a final round under par. He birdied the 16th and 17th holes down the stretch with putts of 5-feet and 35-feet, respectively, to take secure the win.

“I have never seen a player play as well as Sebastian did in all my years of coaching over the final 36 holes,” Arkansas head coach Brad McMakin said at the time. “To shoot 66 today, in these conditions, is a credit to Sebastian’s ability.”

Cappelen, who trailed South Carolina’s Caleb Sturgeon by four strokes entering the final round, won medalist honors by three strokes over the Gamecock and outdistanced a pair of golfers tied for third by seven strokes.

With his win, Cappelen jumped 32 spots into the World Amateur Golf Ranking to #23.

Cappelen was named first team All-SEC, Taylor Moore was voted the 2013 SEC Freshman of the Year and, for the second-straight year, Austin Cook earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.
