Pair of Arkansas Golfers Collect SEC Weekly Honors
FAYETTEVILLE – After a big week at the Puerto Rico Classic, a pair of Arkansas golfers earned SEC weekly honors, the league announced Monday.
Sophomore Maria José Marin was named SEC Golfer of the Week for the third time this season and Clarisa Temelo was named SEC Freshman of the Week for the first time in her career.
José Marin picked up her second individual title of the season with a 9-under 207 at the Puerto Rico Classic. She also led Arkansas to its fourth straight tournament win. Her score of 207 is tied for the second lowest in her career. She had a flawless second round, with four birdies and 14 pars to card her first 68 of the tournament. The Cali, Colombia native was a key piece in the Hogs’ third round comeback and posted another 68 on the same day the team went 15-under (273) for its lowest 18-hole team score since 2018. The Hogs won the tournament by 13 strokes.
Temelo, who made her fourth tournament appearance for Arkansas, picked up her highest collegiate finish at third place (-6). In the third round, Temelo shot the tournament’s lowest score, 66, which was also her first round in the 60s. She was also a key piece in Arkansas’ lowest day since 2018. The Querétaro, Mexico native tallied seven birdies, with five on the back nine. Temelo has three straight top 10 finishes.
José Marin, Temelo and the Hogs will return to the course later this month at the Chevron Collegiate hosted by the University of Houston at the Golf Club of Houston. The field includes Arkansas, Houston, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Iowa State, Maryland, Indiana, TCU, Texas Tech, SMU, Iowa, Illinois, Texas State, North Texas and Tulsa.
