Planelles Ripoll Tabbed to All-SEC Second Team
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Sophomore Gerard Planelles Ripoll was named to the All-SEC Second Team as announced by the league Thursday. Planelles Ripoll is the first Razorback to receive All-SEC honors under head coach Jay Udwadia.
During his fall campaign, Planelles Ripoll advanced to the qualifying draw at the ITA All-American Championships after opening the tournament in the prequalifying draw and winning his first four matches to earn his spot in the qualifying draw. Planelles Ripoll ended the fall with a 7-3 record and finished inside the ITA top-125 rankings at No. 117.
The Alicante, Spain, native picked up 13 victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions and posted a 14-10 overall record for Arkansas, going 3-1 in his last four matches against ranked opponents and winning five of his last six matches overall.
Planelles Ripoll was named SEC Player of the Week after leading the Hogs to a 3-0 weekend with victories over No. 37 LSU, No. 8 Texas A&M, and No. 51 Rice while securing the highest ranked win of his career after a victory over No. 30 JC Roddick (Texas A&M).
The sophomore achieved a career-high singles ranking of No. 89 this spring and clinched wins for the Razorbacks against No. 25 Florida, No. 51 Rice, Lamar, and Nebraska. In doubles, Planelles Ripoll compiled a 3-3 record in 12 appearances for Arkansas.
First-team and second-team All-SEC honorees, All-Freshman team, along with Player, Coach and Freshman of the Year were chosen by the league’s 13 coaches.
