LAST TIME OUT

  • Arkansas Women’s Basketball traveled to snowy Tennessee to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores Thursday night, and the Razorbacks fell, 54-51.
  • The Hogs shot just 28 percent on a night where neither team was able to garner much offensive production. The Hogs went on several spurts, but could never close the gap completely.
  • Sophomore guard Sasha Goforth gathered some big numbers on the tough shooting night, going for a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, both team-highs.
  • Amber Ramirez was also an offensive catalyst for the Hogs, draining five of 10 three-point attempts to account for her 15 points on the night.
  • The lid was on the basket to start in this one, as both teams combined to shoot 22% in the first quarter. A second quarter that saw the ‘Backs and the ‘Dores find some offensive rhythm brought the halftime score to 29-25 in favor of Vandy.
  • The uptick in offense was not mimicked in the second half, as each defense put the clamps on and made it hard for either team to apply any scoreboard pressure. Arkansas shot the ball 15 more times than Vanderbilt thanks to 17 offensive rebounds but failed to capitalize, and Vanderbilt got it done in the paint in the game’s most crucial moments. Of the Commodores’ 54 points, 32 were scored down low.
  • Arkansas’ defense kept the Hogs in it, and junior guard Makayla Daniels had a look at a three-pointer to send the game to extra time, but the shot missed wide right and Vanderbilt escaped with a defensive victory.
  • Daniels tallied seven points and nine rebounds in a tough 34 minutes of game time.
  • Samara Spencer dished out a team-high four assists.

STORYLINES

  • As 2022 gets underway, Arkansas is 10-5, following back-to-back SEC losses.
  • Despite that, the Hogs continue to stay up in the NET Rankings, and are currently 29th.
  • Arkansas dropped its second straight SEC game, falling at Vanderbilt, 54-51.
  • Sasha Goforth double-doubled, leading the way with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Before that, the Hogs lost to then-No. 7 Tennessee in a close one, 70-63.
  • Arkansas led 48-45 after three quarters, but the Hogs couldn’t weather the storm late, as five Hogs fouled out against Tennessee.
  • Arkansas now faces a crucial home test, as Missouri, who is 2-0 in the league, comes to BWA.
  • Mizzou won the game of the year so far, toppling No. 1 South Carolina, 70-68, in OT.
  • The Tigers did so without Aijha Blackwell, who is averaging 16.4 PPG and 12.8 RPG this season.
  • Makayla Daniels has become the leader of this team – through 15 games, Daniels leads the team in scoring (14.2 PPG), assists (2.7 APG), and steals (1.8 SPG), and is third in rebounding (5.3 RPG).
  • Against Little Rock, Daniels held Sali Kourouma, who was averaging 21.7 points per game coming in, to just eight points on 2-16 shooting. Kourouma also had eight turnovers.
  • Against UCA, Daniels swiped six steals, a career-high, and the most by a Hog since Chelsea Dungee had seven against JSU (12/30/18).

SCOUTING MIZZOU

  • The Tigers come into the game with serious momentum, as they join Tennessee as the only team in the SEC with multiple league wins without any losses.
  • One of those wins, as previously mentioned, came against No.1 South Carolina at Mizzou Arena.
  • Though she didn’t play in the South Carolina win, Aijha Blackwell remains the Tigers’ best player. She is averaging a monster double-double line – just over 16 points and nearly 13 boards per game.
  • She scored her 1000th career point on Thursday night against Auburn. The Tigers won that game in OT, 72-63, their second straight OT win.
  • Head Coach Robin Pingeton doesn’t just have to rely on Blackwell, as Hayley Frank, Lauren Hanson and LaDazhia Williams are also potent weapons for Mizzou.
  • Frank is averaging 15 points and five rebounds per game, while hitting 45 percent of her threes.
  • Hansen is also a sniper, averaging 11 points per game on 40 percent shooting from deep.
  • Williams, meanwhile, is putting up just under nine points per game.
