Razorback Brew 2/6: Revel The Road

Good morning. A win, is a win, is a win. The Arkansas men’s and women’s basketball teams both got the job done on the road this weekend in gutsy fashion.

There was much to celebrate following the Razorbacks beating South Carolina. Go inside the locker room after the win, and hear from Devo DavisRicky Council and Coach Muss as the Hogs notched their fourth straight SEC win.

Now, what else is steeping in today’s Brew?

  • Catching up with Kevin Scanlon
  • Road wins for the Hogs
  • And much, much more!

Once a Razorback, always a Razorback. Kevin Scanlon is an Arkansas legend, on and off the field. He’s not a native son, but he might as well be. After all, he chose to make the state his home and understands what it means to be a Razorback.

In this special episode of the Hog Pod, senior contributor Clay Henry sits down with Scanlon to bring you his story, from the 1978 Orange Bowl and Lou Holtz, to where he is today with Stephens Inc.

> REVEL IN THE ROAD. It took a total team effort for Arkansas men’s basketball to capture its first true road win of the season. The Razorbacks had four players score 10 points or more in their 65-63 victory over South Carolina Saturday afternoon in Columbia.

Arkansas got two great performances off the bench. Jalen Graham led the Hogs with 16 points and shot 80% from the field, while Jordan Walsh added six offensive boards and 10 rebounds in total. The duo played a combined 54 minutes of action.

The win brings the Hogs to 16-7 on the year, and 5-5 in SEC play. They’ll look for a fifth-straight conference W tomorrow night at Kentucky.

> GUTTED IT OUT. Arkansas women’s basketball also left Fayetteville for the weekend and came back with a one-possession victory. The Razorbacks’ 54-51 win at Auburn featured the same number of total fouls as points for Arkansas. The Hogs drained 23 free throws throughout the game.

Saylor Poffenbarger had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, while Erynn Barnum led the team in scoring with 14 points and came one rebound short of her own double-double. Makayla Daniels made the most free throws for Arkansas with six, including two that sealed the game in the final seconds.

The Razorbacks have reached 18 wins on the season, which matches their total from last season.

> PACKED PALACE. For a second consecutive year, the Arkansas Gymbacks set a new attendance record for Palace Night inside Bud Walton Arena. 11,031 Razorback fans watched on hand as No. 18 Arkansas put up their third-highest score in program history in a close loss to No. 2 Florida, 197.400-197.875.

Reigning SEC Freshman of the Week Lauren Williams earned a share of the floor title with a personal high of 9.950, and fellow freshman Cally Swaney earned new career bests on both bars and beam. Her 9.925 on beam was good for third place.

> NOT ONE BLEMISH. The Razorbacks men’s tennis team continued their dominance at home with victories over East Tennessee State and Illinois State. The Hogs took a 6-1 win over the Buccaneers Friday night before returning to the court Sunday and swept the Redbirds to move to 9-1 on the season. Arkansas’ undefeated home record of 6-0 almost perfectly matches junior Melvin Manuel‘s 7-0 record in singles play this year.

> FANTASTIC FOUR BY FOUR. Both of Arkansas track and field’s 4 x 400m relay teams showed out this weekend at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Saturday. The men’s foursome put together the second fastest 4 x 400m relay ever as the Razorbacks broke the school record with a 3:01.09 victory, and Chris Bailey‘s split of 44.32 now ranks No. 4 all-time in the world. The ladies weren’t too far behind with a 3:30.98 effort in the 4 x 400m relay, which was good enough for second place at the event. Let’s see which other Razorbacks claimed victory in Albuquerque:

  • Amanda Fassold improved her indoor pole vault best to 14-10.75 to win the event and take sole possession of the collegiate lead for 2023.
  • Jordan West won the shot put in dramatic fashion, winning with a career-best toss of 66-5.76 and edging out two-time NCAA Champion Arizona State’s Turner Washington.
  • Jaydon Hibbert made his freshman debut special as he claimed the triple jump with identical marks of 54-10.75 from a short approach in the first two rounds. It’s the current collegiate leader and ranks fourth in the world for 2023.

Stringing together wins. That’s four SEC wins in a row for Arkansas men’s basketball. Q and Z react to the Hogs holding off South Carolina from over the weekend.
