Razorbacks claim individual & team title at Gans Creek Classic
COLUMBIA – No. 16 Arkansas claimed both individual and team titles at the eighth annual Gans Creek Classic hosted by Missouri on Friday.
The Razorbacks, behind a 1-2 individual finish by Ernest Cheruiyot and Nick Busienei, scored 69 points for the team win over Tennessee (75), Wichita State (170), Colorado School of Mines (175), Ole Miss (202), No. 28 Missouri (230), Florida State (253), Colorado State (265), Illinois (269), and No. 30 Kansas (273) among the top 10 teams in a field of 30.
Adjusted scoring amid the top five finishers for Arkansas included places of 1-2-13-17-36 while Tennessee followed with an order of 8-9-14-16-28.
Cheruiyot won the 8,000m race in 22:32.8 with Busienei runner-up in 22:34.0. Nicholas Kipchirchir of Wichita State finished third in 22:40.5. The meet record of 22:24.7 was set in 2025 by Washington State’s Solomon Kipchoge, which also serves as the course record.
The performance by Cheruiyot ranks fourth all-time on the Gans Creek course as well as in the Classic behind Kipchoge, Joash Ruto of Iowa State (22:32.0), and Tulane’s Bernard Cheruiyot (22:32.4) from the 2025 Classic race. Busienei ranks fifth all-time on the course and in the Classic.
Splits for Cheruiyot and Busienei in leading the field throughout the race included 2:41.8, 5:27.3, 8:18.0, 11:05.1, 13:52.6, 16:47.7, 19:39.9, and 22:32.8 at each 1k for Cheruiyot with 2:41.9, 5:26.4, 8:18.1, 11:05.2, 13:53.3, 16:51.8, 19:46.2, and 22:34.0 for Busienei.
Adjusted finishes for the rest of the Arkansas top five included 13th for James Sankei (23:00.9), 17th for Allen Bonnesen (23:15.9), and 36th for Trey Caldwell (23:35.4). Trenton Sandler led the next crew of Razorbacks, placing 53rd (23:53.9), followed by Gavin Genisio in 74th (24:03.5).
Additional Razorbacks in the meet included Jackson Free, who posted a 24:13.1, Eli Seavey covered the course in 24:33.0 while Timothy Chesondin ran 24:56.4. In the Open race, Owan Logorodi finished 10th with a time of 25:21.1 while Dawson Welch clocked 27:40.3.
Arkansas will compete in the Chile Pepper Festival on Saturday, October 3, on the Agri Park course in Fayetteville.
