Razorbacks Finish Fourth at CABO; Beat 7 Ranked Teams
LOS CABOS, Mexico – Thomas Curry tied his best 18-hole score in relation to par with a 5-under 66 to post his second top-5 of the season and lead Arkansas to a fourth-place finish in the 14-team CABO COLLEGIATE, played at the par-71 Twin Dolphin Club.
Third-ranked Arizona State led from wire-to-wire and finished 14-under (276-279-283=838) to defend its title and win its third championship in the 15-year history of the event. Sixth-ranked Oklahoma State turned in the best round of the day, a 5-under 279, but was too far back after 36 holes and finished second (843 / -9). #21 Florida State finished third (852 / E) with Arkansas placing fourth (856 / +4).
Arkansas and #29 Tennessee were neck-and-neck with four holes to play. The Razorbacks led by one stroke (+6 to +7, respectively). However, Curry and John Daly II birdied the par-5 first, Curry’s final hole and Daly’s 17th due to a shotgun start. Tennessee had two bogeys over its final four holes to finish fifth (861 /+9).
After a tough fall campaign, the unranked Razorbacks not only beat the ranked Volunteers but finished ahead of #19 Texas Tech, #51 Stanford, #17 Arizona, #14 Vanderbilt, #1 Ole Miss and #49 Houston.
Leading the charge for Arkansas was Curry. The sophomore posted the low round of the day and finished with rounds of 69-66. After his opening-round 73, Curry moved from 27th to 12th to a tie for fifth with a 4-hole score of 208 (-5), which is his second-best career three-day total. In the final round and starting on hole 2, he birdied holes 5, 7 and 8 to get to 3-under. After bogeys on holes 9 and 11, Curry rallied with birdies on holes 12, 13 and 15. Then, he closed his round with a birdie on the par-5, 1st to secure the Razorbacks’ fourth-place finish.
Freshman Gerardo Gomez tied for 14th with a 1-over 214 for three days. After rounds of 70 on the first two days, Gomez turned in a 74 on Tuesday with 13 pars, four bogeys and a birdie.
John Daly II and Erich Fortlage tied for 32nd after posting a 6-over 219 for 54 holes.
Daly started his round with a double bogey on hole 3 then reeled off six pars. After a birdie on hole 10, Daly had three more pars before dropping shots on holes 14, 15 and 16. However, he answered with birdies on holes 17, 18 and 1 to get to +1 for the day. Those string of birdies also helped Arkansas secure its fourth-place finish.
Manuel Lozada tied for 50th (74-73-75=222 / +9)
Pablo Garcia Terol, playing as an individual, tied for the second-best round of the day with a career-best, 4-under 67. He jumped 21 spots on the final round to tie for 54th (82-75-67=225m/ +12). He fell back to 3-under with a bogey on the 11 before getting that shot back with a birdie on the par-3 14th.
Rex Hargrove also competed as an individual and tied for 68th (80-78-74=232 / +19)
