Razorbacks in 11th after 36 Holes at Valspar Collegiate
PALM CITY, Fla. – The Arkansas men’s golf team played rounds one and two of the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, played in Palm City, Fla., at the par-71 Floridian National Golf Club, on Monday and stands in 11th place in the 17-team field.
The Razorbacks were seventh after an opening-round, 4-under-par 280 but carded a 286 in the afternoon session to slip to 11th.
The tournament features 14 of the nation’s top 45 programs. #2 Texas leads with a 36-hole scored of -25 with #3 Arizona State in second at -17. #7 Oklahoma (-13) is third and #1 Auburn (-12) is fourth while #14 Florida State and #17 Duke are tied for fifth (-11).
In the opening round, Gerardo Gomez and Thomas Curry were under par with Erich Fortlage and John Daly II shooting par.
Gomez carded five birdies to shoot 68 in the opening round and offset two bogeys with four birdies to shoot 69 in round two. He is tied for 10th at -5. Fortlage is tied for 27th after posting 1-under-par 141 on Monday. He was even in the morning with an eagle, two bridies, two bogeys and a double. In the afternoon, he had four birdies with three bogeys for a 1-under 70.
Curry and Daly are tied for 50th with a 2-over 144. Curry tallied eight birdies over 36 holes, shooting 70-74. Daly was even in round one thanks to five birdies and had three birdies and an eagle in round two to shoot 73. Manuel Lozada is tied for 72 (73-76).
The event will conclude with 18 final holes on Tuesday.
