Razorbacks Open Season at Pebble Beach

FAYETTEVILLE – The Arkansas men’s golf team will open the 2021-22 campaign this weekend (Sept. 3-5) at one of the nation’s premier collegiate tournaments – the Carmel Cup – and at one of the nation’s premier sites – Pebble Beach Golf Links.

The eight-team field – four SEC schools and four Big 12 schools – features eight programs that reached last spring’s NCAA postseason, seven that advanced to the NCAA Championship and six of the nation’s preseason top 20 teams including four inside the top 10.

The Razorbacks are ranked #19 in the preseason coaches poll with #2 Oklahoma State, #6 Vanderbilt, #7 Oklahoma, #9 Texas Tech and #14 Georgia. Rounding out the field are TCU, coming off a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Championship, and Mississippi State.

The Carmel Cup was not held last season due to COVID-19. However, three Razorbacks – Julian Perico, Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira and Wil Gibson – have experience in the event.

Perico began his collegiate career at the 2018 Carmel Cup and posted a final-round 67 to shoot 3-under for the event and finish tied for 22nd. The following year, Perico tied for second with a 13-under score of 203 (68-68-67). His 203 total ranks as the seventh-best, 54-hole score in school history (he owns the top two as well) and featured 16 birdies, 35 pars and just three bogeys. His 13-under-par ranks fourth-best on the school’s best 54-hole score in relation to par (he also has the third-best and the other fourth-best scores).

Fernandez de Oliveira, a freshman with TCU at the time, posted a 2-under-par total of 214 (71-73-70) and tied for 17th in his collegiate debut at the 2019 Carmel Cup. Gibson opened his collegiate career at the 2018 Carmel Cup and carded rounds of 75-76-72

The 2021 SEC Champion Segundo Oliva Pinto, transfer Luke Long and redshirt freshman Juan Camilo Vesga round out the Razorback lineup.

The event will be a six-count-five format and feature 18 holes each of the three days.
