Razorbacks Run End in US Women's Amateur Semifinals
TULSA, Okla. – The magical runs of Maria Jose Marin and Kendall Todd ended Saturday in the semifinals at the USGA 124th U.S. Women’s Amateur, played at Southern Hills Country Club.
Marin, 1-Down through 14 holes, conceded her match with Asterisk Talley due to an injury suffered on the 13th hole. Rianne Malixi birdied the last two holes to defeat Todd, 1-Up, in the other semifinal.
In the first semifinal, top-seed Marin won the second hole to take an early 1-Up lead. Talley won holes 4 and 6 to put her 1-Up only to see Marin win holes 7 and 8 to regain a 1-Up advantage. Talley won three of the next four holes (9, 11 and 12) – with Marin winning hole 10 – to put Talley 1-Up. On the 13th, Marin injured her knee during the hole and required medical attention. She and Talley tied the 13 and 14th holes. However, the pain was too much for Marin and she conceded the match.
In the second semifinal, Todd and Malixi battled back and forth, tying just seven of the 18 holes played. Todd was in control early, leading 2-Up after holes 4 and 8. Malixi won holes 9 and 10 to square the match. Todd won the 11th and Malixi won the 13th to keep the match tied. Todd grabbed the lead by winning the 16th hole before Malixi reeled off birdies on holes 17 and 18 to advance to the final.
The Arkansas women’s golf team will begin the 2024-25 season in 20 days, Aug. 30-Sept. 1, at the Carmel Cup at historic Pebble Beach Golf Links.
