Razorbacks Solid on Day 1, In 3rd at CABO
LOS CABOS, Mexico – Arkansas put three golfers in the top 20 and stand in third place in a stacked 14-team field after round one of the 15th annual CABO COLLEGIATE, played at the par-71 Twin Dolphin Club.
The Razorbacks fell to 10th midway through the round but moved into fifth at +5 before John Daly II had a birdie on the 15th hole and Gerardo Gomez birdied the first hole (his 17th of the round thanks to a shotgun start), to get to +3 and move into third.
Third-ranked Arizona State leads after 18 holes with an 8-under-par 276, followed by sixth-ranked Oklahoma State at 3-under (281. The Razorbacks came in with a 3-over 287, one stroke ahead of #1 Ole Miss and #51 Stanford, each carding an opening-round 288 (+4). The field also includes ranked teams #21 Florida State (6th at +6), #29 Tennessee (7th at +9), #19 Texas Tech (T8 at 295), #17 Arizona (T8 at 295), #14 Vanderbilt (11th at 296) and #49 Houston (14th at 304).
Arizona State has three among the top three and Oklahoma State has two in the top three. ASU’s Preston Summerhays, ranked #8 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, shares the lead with OSU’s Preston Stout a t4-under 67. OSU’s Ethan Fang, the 22nd-ranked amateur in the world, is tied with a pair of Sun Devils – Michael Mjaaseth and Pongsapak Laopakdee – for third at 3-under (68).
For the Razorbacks, Gomez fired a 1-under-par 70. He started on hole 3 and birdied holes 4 and 5. He also birdied the eighth hole, but dropped shots on holes 6, 9 and 11 to stand at even. The freshman reeled off seven pars before getting a birdie on the par-5, 1st.
Daly and Erich Fortlage are tied for 17th, each carding a 1-over 72. Daly started on hole one and birdied his second hole. After bogeys on holes 6, 8 and 11, his birdie on the 15th put him at 1-over. Erich Fortlage, who tied Gomez for the team lead with four birdies, also shot 72.
Thomas Curry tied Daly for the team lead with 13 pars. He is tied for 27th at +2 (73). Manuel Lozada is tied for 33rd at +3 (74).
Rex Hargrove (T70 / 80) and Pablo Garcia Terol (78th / 82) are playing as individuals.
