Razorbacks Start Spring Season 2-0
SAN DIEGO – The Arkansas men’s tennis team went 2-0 on the day to start the spring season, earning Head Coach Jay Udwadia his first win as the coach of the Razorbacks.
Arkansas started the day out with a tough matchup against the San Diego State Aztecs. The Razorbacks got the early 1-0 lead taking the doubles point. In the top slot, Melvin Manuel and Stefanos Savva defeated their opponents 6-4 followed by a 6-3 win on court two from the duo of Adrien Burdet and Alan Sau Franco.
In singles, freshman Gerard Planelles Ripoll put the Razorbacks up with his first win as a Razorback 6-2, 6-1 over SDSU’s Josserand on court five. Junior Alan Sau Franco helped to extend the lead, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-2 on court four. The Aztecs evened the score with wins on courts one, two and six with the match coming down to Melvin Manuel on court three. Manuel came through, giving the Razorbacks their first win of the season with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 victory.
In the second match of the day, Arkansas was up against UC San Diego who were coming off of 4-3 win over Nevada. The Hogs once again took an early lead, grabbing the doubles point with wins on court two and three. Newcomers Gerard Planelles and Jakob Mosvold teamed up for a 6-1 win, while veterans Melvin Manuel and Foster Rogers secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory.
On court one, Stefanos Savva blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0 for a quick point and his first win as a Razorback. Freshman Gerard Planelles Ripoll followed with his own straight set 6-2, 6-1 victory to put Arkansas one point away from the match win. Junior Melvin Manuel once again sealed the deal, defeating UCSD’s Tinoco 6-1, 7-6.
The Razorbacks will be back in action next Friday for their first home match, a doubleheader against Wichita State and Lamar.
