Razorbacks Sweep Shockers on Friday Night at Barnhill
The No. 21 Razorbacks got their second sweep in as many nights on Friday as Arkansas took down Wichita State 25-19, 25-18 and 25-18.
Senior middle blocker Sania Petties had an outstanding night for the Razorbacks with 12 kills on 16 swings for a .750 hitting clip. Sophomore Romani Thurman led the Hogs with 13 kills on the night, hit .321 and registered two blocks. Senior setter Hannah Hogue paced the offense well with 32 assists and was also big on defense with 15 digs for a double-double.
Arkansas had another solid outing at the service line with six different players tallying eight aces to Wichita State’s four, including three for Hogue.
Set 1
Hogue got an ace to get the match off to a solid start and the Hogs rattled off four of the next five for a 6-1 lead. Wichita State couldn’t get much going, while the Razorbacks continued to roll and extended their advantage to 16-8 off another ace from Hogue. The Shockers picked up momentum and came within three, but the Razorbacks were the first to 20 off an attack error. An ace by freshman Olivia Ruy pushed it to 22-16 in favor of Arkansas, and despite a Shockers run, the Hogs closed it out on a three-point streak, capped by a block from Zoi Evans and Hogue for the 25-19 victory.
Set 2
The middle set was close to start and tied at 7-all, but the Razorbacks scored seven of the next nine and made it 14-9, which prompted a Shockers timeout. It worked for Wichita, as they came back with a 5-0 run to tie the score. Arkansas called time and the two teams knotted it three times after that. But the Hogs found a rhythm and got five straight points for a 22-17 edge. It was too much for the Shockers to overcome, and the Razorbacks ended the set on a three-point run for the 25-18 win and 2-0 lead in the match.
Set 3
The Hogs stayed hot in the beginning of the final frame and jumped out to a 7-2 lead, which included four straight kills from Thurman. Wichita State huddled, but it wasn’t much use as the Razorbacks continued to pour on the points and an ace from Lawson made it 12-5. The Shockers took another timeout and managed to cut the deficit to three, but Arkansas used a four-point run punctuated by a Hogue ace for a 17-10 advantage. Wichita State could not string together more than a pair of points at a time and Arkansas came within three points of the sweep with a kill from Lawson at 22-16. A kill from Hogue and an ace from Avery Calame took it to match point, and while the Shockers added another, Evans shut the door with a kill for the 25-18 set and 3-0 match victory.
