Razorbacks T9th After Rd1 at Austin Regional

AUSTIN, Texas – The 8th-ranked Arkansas men’s golf program is tied for ninth, shooting a 5-over-par 289, after the first round of the NCAA Austin Regional, played at the University of Texas Golf Club (par 71).

The round was suspended for approximately three hours due to weather (rain and lightning).

Host Texas leads the way with an 11-under 273, followed by Notre Dame (-9), Tennessee (-8), BYU (-5) and Georgia (E). The top five teams, plus the top individual not among the top five, after 54 holes will advance to the NCAA Championship.

Graduate senior Jacob Skov Olesen and freshman Thomas Curry each fired a 2-under-par 69 in the opening round to stand in a tie for 10th. Both had a slow start with Olesen opening with a double bogey and Curry starting with a bogey.

However, Olesen reeled off six birdies over a 10-hole span to get to 4-uder. He parred holes 15, 16 and 17 but suffered a double on the final hole for his 69.

After Curry’s bogey on one, he was bogey-free the rest of the way with an eagle on the par-5, 9th and a birdie on the par-4, 10th before closing his day with eight pars to post a 69.

Christian Castillo shot 75 (+4) in the opening round and is tied for 54th. Matthis Lefevre shot 76 and it tied for 60th. John Driscoll III shot 78 and is tied for 72nd.

The second of three rounds is set for Tuesday.

NOTES:
• As a team, Arkansas was tied for the lead by playing the par 3’s at even par. Driscoll played the par 3’s at 1-under while Olesen, Curry and Castillo played the par 3’s at even.
• Curry also played the par 4’s at even and played the par 5’s at 2-under. He was tied for second in the field with 15 pars.
• Olesen tied for the lead by playing the par 5’s at 3-under. He was tied for second in the field with six birdies.
