Three Razorbacks in the Top 5 at Latin America Amateur

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – All four Razorbacks at the 2023 Latin America Amateur Championship will be playing the weekend and three of those are among the top five after 36 holes.

Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira is second at -9 and one stroke back and Julian Perico is third at -8, two strokes back. Manuel Lozada is tied for fifth at -6 while Segundo Oliva Pinto is T42 at +2.

Perico, who has three top-10 finishes at the LAAC, had the round of the day, posting a bogey-free 66 to move into third place (70-66=136/-8). Perico also had the shot of the day. On the par-5, 14th hole, Perico striped his drive and was left with 232 yards to the hole for his second shot. His 4-iron landed about 15 feet from the hole, rolled to the cup and bounced off the pin for a tap-in eagle. For the day, Perico was 4-under at the turn and made several solid par putts on the back nine for eight pars and his eagle.

Fernandez de Oliveira, last year’s runner-up, followed his opening-round 68 with a 67 for a 36-hole total of 135 (-9). He was 4-under at the turn thanks to an eagle on the par-5, 6th hole with birdies on holes 3, 8 and 9. He carded a bogey and two birdies on the inward nine to post his 67.

Lozada fired a 69 for the second straight day and is tied for fifth. The Razorback sophomore also matched his day one scoring with four birdies and a bogey.

Oliva Pinto, who has two top-12 finishes in his previous two LAAC appearances, is tied for 42nd after rounds of 72-74 (+2).
