Women’s Tennis Falls To No. 5 Michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Arkansas women’s tennis team (3-1) concluded the ITA Kickoff Weekend with its first loss of the season, falling 4-0 to No. 5 Michigan (3-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines took the early lead after grabbing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Michigan struck first as Ross/Jones claimed a 6-1 win over Lenka Stara/Grace O’Donnell. The Razorbacks responded with Morgan Cross/Indianna Spink earning a 6-4 victory over No. 8 Brown/Miller. The win for Cross/Spink marked their second top-10 win this year, picking up a victory over then-No. 8 Duong/Heuser (Illinois) at the ITA All-American Championships this past fall. The doubles point came down to court three as Michigan’s Miller/Charney clinched the point with a narrow 6-4 win.
The Wolverines carried their momentum into singles play, taking the first set on five courts. On court three, Spink retired from her match due to injury while No. 10 Miller took down Arkansas’ No. 59 Gomez Alonso, 6-2, 6-1. Michigan secured the final point of the match on court five as Charney bested Cross, 6-1, 6-2.
The Hogs will travel to Arizona for a pair of matches as the Razorbacks face off against Grand Canyon on Thursday, February 8 and Arizona State on Saturday, February 10.
