Arkansas Ready for Final Tournament Before Conference Play

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas volleyball team (5-5) is settling in, in Athens, Ga. this week, as the Razorbacks prepare for their final tournament of the season before jumping into SEC play next week. The 2019 SEC/ACC Challenge is hosted by the Georgia Bulldogs this year and hosts Arkansas, Georgia Tech, and NC State.

The Scouting Report
The Jackets (6-3) return to Georgia after a 1-2 showing at the OU Nike Invitational, picking up a win against Louisiana but dropping two four-set matches to Arizona State as well as the Sooners. Freshman middle blocker Erin Moss is currently leading the Pack and sixth in the ACC with a .383 hitting percentage. Freshman teammate Julie Bergmann is the team’s kill leader, averaging 4.03 kills per set through nine games with seven double-digit kill performances.

The Scouting Report
NC State is coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Appalachian State Invitational where the Pack picked up wins over Western Carolina and Appalachian State. Junior opposite Melissa Evans led the team with an average of 4.46 kills per set, including two 20+ kill performances. Evans is the only player in the ACC with more than one 20+ kill match this season. Additionally, she has recorded double-digits in eight of the nine matches this season and has done so in six-consecutive matches.

 Last Time Out
The Hogs were on the road last weekend on the east coast in College Park. At the Maryland Invite, Arkansas competed against the Terps as well as Ivy League member Princeton and A-10 member George Mason. After dropping the first two matches of the weekend to Maryland (22-25, 25-23, 24-26, 19-25) and Princeton (18-25, 21-25, 19-25), the Razorbacks gave a convincing performance in a 3-1 win over George Mason (25-20, 19-25, 25-20, 25-14).

Maryland All-Tournament Team
Junior transfer Devyn Wheeler averaged 2.55 kills per set over the weekend, knocking down 28 kills behind a .313 clip. Wheeler also recorded six digs and six blocks en route to an all-tournament selection.

Up Next
Arkansas will return to Fayetteville for a few days before hitting the road again, headed south to Baton Rouge, La. to kick off conference play at LSU on Sept. 25. The Hogs will visit Alabama in Tuscaloosa on the 29th before returning home to Barnhill for their SEC home opener against Texas A&M on Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. (CT).
