Arkansas Women’s Golf Heads to The Ally

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas Women’s Golf will be back in action next week, as Head Coach Shauna Taylor’s Hogs are headed to Mississippi to play in The Ally at Old Waverly. The field at the event will once again be strong, as all 14 SEC teams will play, along with Southern Miss. The Hogs will roll into West Point, Miss. with confidence, though, as they are coming off a dominating performance at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational, a tournament the Razorbacks won by 18 strokes.

Redshirt junior Brooke Matthews comes into The Ally on a roll, as she won her second-career individual medal at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational. Matthews was absolutely sensational in the first action of the 2020-21 season, firing a 10-under 206 to win the Blessings Collegiate Invitational by five strokes. Matthews’ great play continues to be a storyline for the Hogs, as she played great in the summer, winning the ASGA Stoke Play Championship before placing in the top-50 at the LPGA’s NW Arkansas Championship. Matthews has a chance to keep it rolling at The Ally, as her familiarity with the course at Old Waverly could be a real advantage. Matthews played the course during the 2019 U.S. Women’s Amateur.

In the second spot for the second straight event is sophomore Julia Gregg, who comes into The Ally having notched a top-20 finish at the BCI. The second year Hog played a key roll in Taylor’s squad holding the lead on day three of the BCI, as she fired a 72, her best round of the tournament. Gregg has now notched two top-20 finishes in her career.

Sophomore Kajal Mistry is in the third slot of Taylor’s lineup at the Ally after matching Gregg’s 18th place finish at the BCI. Like Gregg, Mistry saved her best stuff for last, carding a 70 on day three, one of four rounds played under par at the BCI by any Razorback that took part in the event. Her 18th place finish at the BCI was the fourth top-20 finish for Mistry already in her career.

Moving up to the fourth spot in the lineup is freshman Cory Lopez, who placed 11th at the BCI after an impressive showing in her first collegiate event. Lopez showed her maturity at the BCI – after carding a 77 on day two, she came back and fired a 73 on day three to regain her spot inside the top-15. That 73 came courtesy of some clutch golf late in the final round, as Lopez birdied three of her last four holes.

Sophomore Ela Anacona holds down the fifth spot in the lineup for the Hogs. Anacona finished the BCI tied for 23rd, the fifth top-25 finish of her career. Her 71 on day two was one of four rounds played under par at the event.
