José Marin crowned back-to-back South American Amateur champion
VITACURA, Chile – Arkansas women’s golf sophomore Maria José Marin, representing her home country of Colombia, won the South American Amateur after carding a 17-under, 271 in the four day event at Club de Golf Sport Francés (Par 72) in Vitacura, Chile.
José Marin finished 12 strokes ahead of runner-up Scarlett Schremmer and completed each round under par with a 69, 68, 70 and tournament low 64 on Sunday.
The Cali, Colombia native went into the final round atop the leaderboard 9-under par and widened her advantage. On the front nine of Sunday’s fourth round, José Marin parred eight of nine holes but picked up steam with an eagle on the par-5 No. 4. After the turn, she managed to birdie six of nine remaining holes, Nos. 12, 13, 14, 16, 17 and 18 and turn in that 8-under par 64.
Last year in Bogota, Colombia, José Marin finished even par to win her first South American Am by just two strokes over NC State’s Vania Simont.
José Marin and the No. 2 Razorbacks will begin the spring season at the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 2.
