Razorbacks Set for U.S. Amateur
FAYETTEVILLE – Five Razorbacks – two current, two incoming freshmen and one former – will compete at the 124th USGA U.S. Amateur Championship, played Aug. 12-18 in Chaska, Minn., at Hazeltine National Golf Club and Chaska Town Course.
The top 64 players after stroke play (Aug. 12-13) will advance to match play at Hazeltine starting Wednesday (Aug. 14).
Current Hogs Thomas Curry and John Daly II qualified via a 5-for-4 playoff at Brook Hollow Golf Club in Dallas on July 24 to earn their berth to Hazeltine. Both carded a 2-under-par 68 and were two of 10 that advanced from Brook Hollow. Curry and Daly will start at Chaska Town Course on Monday and play Hazeltine on Tuesday.
Incoming freshmen Gerardo Gomez and Erich Fortlage qualified by winning two tournaments. First, Gomez won the 2024 Mexico National Amateur by five strokes (70-68-67-69) to secure his invitation. Later, Fortlage won his US Amateur qualifier by shooting a 67 at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.
Oliva Pinto is no stranger to the U.S. Amateur, reaching the Round of 16 in 2020 in Bandon Dunes. He earned his berth this season by placing fifth and shooting 70 at the Rockford, Ill., qualifier.
Gomez, Fortlage and Oliva Pinto will play Hazeltine in round one and at Chaska on Tuesday.
