#9 Arkansas, Gomez and Curry all T2 After Rd1 at CABO COLLEGIATE
LOS CABOS, Mexico – Gerardo Gomez shot a bogey-free 67 (-4), Thomas Curry had an eagle on 18 for a 67 (-4) and the #9 Arkansas Razorbacks are at -3 (281) as all three stand in a tie for second at the 16th annual CABO COLLEGIATE, played on the par-71 Twin Dolphin Club.
Several teams took turns sharing the lead throughout the day, topping the leaderboard with just eight strokes separating first from 11th. #11 Oklahoma State holds down the top spot after 18 holes. The Cowboys are -4 (28)0. Arkansas and #7 Arizona State are tied for second at -3 (281) while #7 Ole Miss, Cal and Rice are a stroke back and tied for fourth at 282 (-2). #17 Georgia Tech, which held the lead at one point, is seventh (283), followed by #18 Tennessee, (284), #36 Florida State, #20 Stanford (286), #27 Arizona (288) and #5 Vanderbilt (292).
Cal’s Ziqin Zhou leads the individual race by three strokes after carding a bogey-free 64 (-7) on Sunday. Gomez, Curry, Raines Watson (Rice) and Preston Stout (Oklahoma State) share second at 67 (-4).
Gomez, who started on hole 4, made the loop with 14 pars and birdies on holes 7, 15, `6 and 1 to post his 4-under 67. It marks his low score for 18 holes this season and ties his best total for 18 holes.
Curry got off to a hot start with three pars and birdies on holes 5 and 6. However, he fell back to even with bogeys on holes 7 and 8. From that point on, he was bogey free with birdies on holes 9 and 13 and his eagle on 18. On the par-4, 423-yard 18th, Curry was 101 yards out after his drive. The pin sat in the back-left portion on the green. He hit “a little” 54-degree wedge that landed just past the hole and spun back in for the eagle.
Erich Fortlage is 1 of 9 tied for 11th at -2 (69). He nearly had a clean scorecard, turning in 13 pars, a bogey and three birdies. He was even after 14 holes with a birdie on 3 and a bogey on 14). He played his final four holes at -2 with birdies on holes 15 and 17.
Niilo Maki-Petaja, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 33rd after his 1-over 72. John Daly II (78) and Cam Smith (79) are tied for 72nd and 75th, respectively.
Round two of three of the CABO COLLEGIATE will be played on Monday.
