#9 Razorbacks 3rd After Rd1 at Cabo
LOS CABOS, Mexico – The #9 Arkansas men’s golf program was 7-under-par on the back nine and was one of three teams under par to stand in third place with a 3-under 281 after round one of the 14th annual Cabo Collegiate, presented by the Rodger and B.A. Kline Foundation, at the par-71 Twin Dolphin Club.
The Razorbacks had four players among the top 15. Jacob Skov Olesen and Mateo Pulcini (playing as an individual) are tied for second – one shot off the lead – after an opening-round, 3-under 68. John Daly II is tied for eighth thanks to a 2-under 69 and Thomas Curry is tied for 13th, firing a 1-under 70.
The 15-team field, featuring 12 of the top 51 programs including six of the top 10, is led by #6 Arizona State, which fired an 8-under 276, with Houston in second at -7 (277). Following Arkansas to round out the top five are #3 Vanderbilt (+3), #18 Cal (+4), #51 Stanford (+4) and #7 Tennessee (+4). Tennessee’s Jake Hall leads after round one at -4 (67).
Olesen started on hole two and got to 1-under after a birdie on the par-4, 5th hole. He dropped a shot on hole 6, but answered with a birdie on hole 7. After eight straight pars, Olesen birdied holes 16 and 18 before finishing with a par on hole one for his 68.
Pulcini opened on hole 17 and birdied 18. After a bogey on hole 2, he reeled off nine pars before closing his day with birdies on hole 12, 14 and 15 to post his 68.
Daly was even par after nine holes with two birdies and two bogeys on the outward nine. He birdies holes 12 and 13 and finished his round with five pars to shoot a 2-under 69.
Curry started on hole 4 and started slowly with bogeys on holes 5 and 6. He got back to even par with birdies on holes 8 and 10. After a bogey on hole 15, he bided holes 18 and 1 then closed with two pars for a 1-under-par 70.
Manuel Lozada, who started on hole 3, had four birdies on the back nine with two bogeys but a double bogey on hole dropped him from 1-over to 3-over and put him in a tie for 42nd (74).
John Driscoll III is tied for 51st (75 / +4) and Matthis Lefevre, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 66th (77 / +6).
Day two of the Cabo Collegiate is set for Monday (Mar. 4) with the final round scheduled for Tuesday.
