Arkansas Comes Back to Beat Central Arkansas in Overtime, 89-77
FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas women’s basketball (3-0) was down by seven points against Central Arkansas (1-2) with 2:37 remaining in the fourth quarter but battled back to tie the game at 74-74 with a three-pointer from junior guard Emily Robinson with 12 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
The Hogs outscored UCA 15-3 in the overtime period to remain undefeated in Kelsi Musick’s first season.
First Quarter – 22-18
- Arkansas controlled the tip but missed its first field goal of the game.
- Bonnie Deas fouled Bree Stephens’ attempt from beyond the arc and Stephens went 3-3 at the line.
- The Hogs made back-to-back threes from Emily Robinson and Maria Anais Rodriguez to end UCA’s 5-0 start.
- The Sugar Bears scored on five of their first seven possessions, but Arkansas forced a shot clock violation at the 5:20 mark to stop the scoring.
- Maryn Archer tied the game at 12-12 with her only points of the game.
- A 12-2 run for Arkansas and a 2:45 minute scoring drought for UCA gave the Hogs a 18-14 advantage.
- A steal by Jenna Lawrence led to a two-point basket by Rodriguez but the Sugar Bears made a buzzer-beater layup.
- Ashlynn Chlarson grabbed six boards in the first quarter.
Second Quarter – 37-41
- Central Arkansas opened the quarter with back-to-back-to-back threes to take a 27-22 lead.
- It was 32-26 UCA at the media timeout.
- The Hogs went on a 10-0 run to tie it up at 32-32 with under four minutes to play.
- Jenna Lawrence tied it with two free throws, then made a three on the next possession to give Arkansas its first lead since the 9:42 mark at 37-34.
- Central Arkansas closed the half on a 7-0 run and the Hogs were scoreless in the final 2:29 to give UCA a 41-37 lead at the break.
- UCA shot 55.6% (5-9) from three and outscored Arkansas 23-15 in the second quarter.
- Deas led the Razorbacks with nine points and, for the first time this season, the Hogs trailed at halftime.
Third Quarter – 57-61
- Emily Robinson drove through the lane to give the Hogs their first points of the third quarter
- Bonnie Deas entered double figures for the third straight game with an and-one at the 8:43 mark.
- UCA shot 67% in the third until the media timeout and jumped out to a 59-52 lead with three straight makes.
- Arkansas held UCA without a field goal in the last 2:41 of the quarter and cut the lead to four points after Jada Bates made a three.
Fourth Quarter – 74-74
- Taleyah Jones scored four straight points after having one all game to cut UCA’s lead to one, 63-62.
- The Sugar Bears had a 0-4 stretch from the field and Arkansas cut the lead to two points after Harmonie Ware with 5:11 remaining in the game
- UCA jumped back out to a seven-point lead with 2:22 on the clock after Jenna Cook made a three, her third of the game.
- Deas hit a three with 1:21 left to cut Central Arkansas’ lead to three points and hit the 18-point mark.
- With 12 seconds left, Robinson hit a corner three to tie the game at 74-74.
- The Sugar Bears took the final shot, but it Arkansas grabbed the rebound to seal the tie.
Overtime
- Both teams opened the extra period with free throws, but Arkansas, led by Ware and Rodriguez with six points each, controlled the rest of the game.
- The Hogs shot 10 free throws and made eight.
Game Notes
- Arkansas’ last overtime win occurred 364 days ago against another in-state opponent, Little Rock, in Little Rock, Arkansas.
- Bonnie Deas recorded her second straight double-double (18 points and 12 rebounds) to lead Arkansas and finished her first week of games with 18.3 points per game, 9.3 rebounds per game and 3.7 assists per game.
- The Razorbacks improved to 7-0 all-time against UCA and 27-4 against DI in-state opponents. Arkansas is 2-0 this season against in-state foes with wins over UAPB and UCA. The Hogs will face Little Rock and Arkansas State later in the non-conference slate.
- Kelsi Musick tied Matilda Willis and Susie Garnder for the third-best start as a first-year head coach at Arkansas: 3-0.
- UCA finished with four players in double figures and led for 31:28.
- Arkansas shot 36.1% (26-72) compared to UCA’s 39.0% (30-77).
