Arkansas Defeated by Arkansas State on Saturday
In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, Arkansas volleyball came up short as the Hogs were defeated by in-state rival Arkansas State on Saturday, 3-1 (17-25, 15-25, 25-21, 22-25).
Freshman outside Parker Duncan led the Razorbacks in kills with 18. Two more Hogs had double-digit kills: Lakin Laurendine with 12 and Romani Thurman with 10.
Sophomore setter Kiki Remensperger had a historic match with 46 assists, putting her over 1,000 in her career so far. She also contributed a team-high 10 digs on the day for her seventh double-double of the season and had two aces as well.
Both teams had strong showings defensively, with double-digit blocks. Zoi Evans led the contingent for Arkansas with six, including one solo, and Journey Peppers and Duncan each had four apiece.
The Hogs have officially concluded their non-conference season at 4-7 and open the SEC slate with two home matches next week: against Ole Miss on Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. and against LSU on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m.
Set 1
Arkansas State immediately had all the momentum in the opening set, limiting the Hogs to just one point at a time as the Red Wolves scored in spurts, jumping out to a quick 13-6 lead, which led to an Arkansas timeout. The Red Wolves weren’t slowly down, though, and went up by 10 shortly after. There was little the Hogs could do to stop the bleeding, and while they put together a three-point run near the end, the Red Wolves closed it out with a kill for the 25-17 set one victory.
Set 2
The second set was slightly closer to start, but Arkansas State put up a 5-1 run that made its lead five points at 11-6. The Hogs trimmed it to three shortly after, but four straight from the Red Wolves made it 15-8 Arkansas State at the media break. They just kept going from there, growing their lead to 22-12, and Arkansas called time. The Red Wolves kept up the pace and cruised to a 25-15 set victory and 2-0 advantage in the match.
Set 3
The Hogs began to find their rhythm in the third set, taking an early 6-2 lead. Kills from Thurman and Laurendine extended the advantage to 9-4, and the Red Wolves called time. From there, Arkansas State put together a 6-1 run that tied the score at 10-10, and the Hogs took their turn to huddle. It was close from there with five ties, but the Red Wolves rattled off three straight points for an 18-15 lead. Arkansas re-took the lead for a bit, but Arkansas State tied it at 20-all. In response, the Razorbacks went on a four-point service run highlighted with two aces from Remensperger, and Arkansas closed it 25-22, forcing at least one more set.
Set 4
An early 5-2 lead for the Hogs disappeared fast as the Red Wolves locked in for a 6-1 run that put them ahead by two. A-State kept on pushing and started to pull away with a 17-12 advantage. Arkansas stayed in it and came within two off a Thurman kill at 17-15, and Arkansas State called time. It did work for the Red Wolves, as they started to settle in again and went up 22-18, prompting an Arkansas timeout this time. The Hogs brought it within one thanks to an A-State service error and a Duncan kill, but the Red Wolves righted the ship out of a timeout and closed it out 25-22 for a 3-1 match victory.
