Arkansas Drops Final SEC Game at Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. – Arkansas women’s basketball (18-13, 6-10 SEC) closed out the regular season with a loss at Ole Miss (22-7, 12-4 SEC), 87-43, while being limited to eight available players for the second straight game. The Hogs never led in the game at SJB Pavilion, dropping four straight games to close out the regular season. The Hogs led by Maryam Dauda and Makayla Daniels, who each had 11.

The Rebels got on the board first off a second-chance jumper, starting the game on a 6-0 run. Saylor Poffenbarger then found an open Daniels and Poffenbarger came up with a layup off a spin move to get the Hogs on the board. Daniels then knocked down a triple, but Ole Miss quickly responded with one of their own. After another 3-pointer by the Rebels, Ole Miss led, 16-9, at the media timeout taken with 4:29 to play in the first. Ole Miss came up with two baskets out of the break to extend their lead and continue on a 9-0 run. Carly Keats broke the Hogs’ 3.5-minute scoring drought with a driving layup, but that was the last field goal the Hogs could get in the quarter 27-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Poffenbarger took another tough layup, but the Rebels had a response, as the Hogs trailed 31-13 with 8:31 left in the second quarter. Spencer and Poffenbarger then drained deep 3-pointers, but the Rebels had an answer with baskets both times. Arkansas called a timeout, trailing 37-22 with 5:55 left in the second quarter. The Rebels continued their run, stretching to a 6-0 one, as the Hogs trailed 41-22 with 4:22 left in the first half. Daniels found Dauda quickly for a layup, which started a 6-0 run for Arkansas, while Ole Miss was held in a scoring drought for nearly three minutes. Dauda then came up with a tough jumper and got fouled in the process but missed the free throw. At the half, Arkansas trailed 48-32.

The Rebels extended their lead to 27 after scoring the first 11 points of the second half. Arkansas called a timeout with 5:42 left in the quarter, still searching for their first points in the second half, trailing 59-32. The Rebels were held in a scoring drought for over three minutes, but Arkansas did not score until 2:13 left in the quarter, and Daniels got the Hogs’ first field goal 8:59 into the quarter. After being outscored 16-4 in the third, Arkansas trailed 64-36 going into the final quarter.

Ole Miss opened the fourth quarter on a 10-1 run, while Arkansas continuously struggled from the field, still looking for a field goal at the media timeout taken with 4:23 left in the game. Arkansas trailed 74-37. Spencer logged Arkansas’ first field goal of the quarter, but the Hogs were outscored 23-7 in the fourth. The Hogs fell 87-43.

HOG HIGHLIGHTS

• Dauda logged her 16th double-digit scoring game behind 11 points. She added two boards and two blocks, now with 73 swats on the season
• Daniels registered 11 points for her 21st double-digit scoring game of the season. She also had two steals
• Spencer scored in double digits for the 24th time, finishing with 10 points, three rebounds, one block and one steal
• Emrie Ellis recorded two blocks in 14 minutes played off the bench. Jenna Lawrence added four boards in a career-high 24 minutes played
• Poffenbarger recorded seven points, six rebounds and one steal

The Hogs will gear up for the SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina, set to take place from March 6-10 at Bon Secours Wellness Center. The official bracket will be released tonight.
