
Arkansas Falls in Heartbreaker to Ole Miss in SEC Tourney
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ole Miss guard Sean Pedulla only made one 3-pointer (1-of-7) but his one came with two seconds left to give his Rebels an 83-80 victory over Arkansas in the second round of the SEC Tournament Thursday afternoon.
The loss spoiled a double-double by Trevon Brazile (15 points and 11 rebounds – including six offensive boards) as five Razorbacks scored in double figures.
Arkansas was down eight at halftime thanks to a 7-0 run to end the period. Arkansas then out-scored the Rebels, 10-4 to start the second half as part of a 17-4 run. Ole Miss’ Davon Barnes temporarily halted the run with a 3-pointer.
However, with Ole Miss leading 52-48, Arkansas used a 13-2 run to grab its largest lead of the game, 61-53. In the spurt, Jonas Aidoo had an old-fashioned 3-point play, D.J. Wagner had a steal and a layup and Trevon Brazile made a 3-pointer.
Ole Miss would tie the game at 63 with 6:45 left. The Rebels grabbed a six-point lead (75-69) with 3:48 before Brazile hit a 3-pointer and Jaylen Murray answered with a basket.
Karter Knox and Billy Richmond III each made two free throws to make it a one-point game. On the ensuing Ole Miss possession, Knox blocked a shot that led to a shot clock violation. Knox then made two free throws to give Arkansas a one-point lead (78-77) with 1:23 left. After a defensive stop, Wagner scored to give the Hogs a 3-point advantage.
Ole Miss’s Dre Davis answered with an old-fashioned 3-point play to tie the game at 80-80. Brazile got an offensive rebound and was fouled with seven seconds but did not convert. Davis grabbed the offensive rebound, and passed the ball to Pedulla, who pulled up and sank the game winner with two seconds left.
FIRST HALF: Arkansas: 34 – Ole Miss: 42
- Ole Miss scored the first nine points of the game, including seven from Malik Dia.
- Arkansas made 5-of-5 field goals, including Johnell Davis converting an old-fashioned 3-point play and making a 3-pointer to grab a 16-14 lead.
- The Hogs went cold and fell to 32-21 after a 3-minute drought. Karter Knox ended the spell with a free throw at 4:47 to make it a 10-point game (32-22). However, Ole Miss pushed its lead to 15 (37-22) with 3:43 left.
- Arkansas ended a four-minute span with no field goals when Billy Richmond made his second 3-pointer of the year (and second in as many days). He followed with a layup to make the score 37-27.
- Ole Miss regained a 15-point advantage with 1:25 left, leading 42-27, but the Hogs closed the half with a 7-0 run. Jonas Aidoo made two free throws, Knox made a 3-pointer and Trevon Brazile had steal and dunk.
- Both teams shot 44% from the field but Arkansas committed seven turnovers thanks to seven Ole Miss steals.
- Davis and Aidoo each had eight points.
- Jaylen Murray led Ole Miss with 10 points.
SECOND HALF: Arkansas: 46 – Ole Miss: 41
- Brazile and Knox led Arkansas’ second-half rally. Brazile had 11 points and nine rebounds with all six of his offensive rebounds. Knox added 10 points and three assists.
- Arkansas out-rebounded the Rebels, 20-13, with 10 offensive boards.
GAME NOTES:
- For the sixth straight game, Arkansas’ starting lineup was D.J. Wagner, Johnell Davis, Karter Knox, Trevon Brazile and Zvonimir Ivisic.
- Ole Miss won the opening tip.
- Ole Miss’ Malik Dia scored the game’s first points 19:45. Arkansas’ first points came from Jonas Aidoos at 17:03.
- Jonas Aidoo and Billy Richmond III were Arkansas’ first subs.
- Arkansas is 32-32 at the SEC Tourney but falls to 2-5 in second round games.
- Arkansas is 12-12 in Bridgestone Arena for the SEC Tournament.
- John Calipari is 25-9 in the SEC Tourney. For his career, Coach Calipari is 59-17 in conference tourneys as head coach with 16 titles in 31 conference tournaments held.
- This was just the second time Arkansas has faced Ole Miss in the SEC Tourney and the Rebels are 2-0. The other meeting was in 2017.
- This was the 89th meeting between Arkansas and Ole Miss. Arkansas owns a 52-36 advantage all-time in the series. This was just the third time Arkansas has lost to Ole Miss in a neutral site game (24-3 all-time in neutral-site games).
- Since Arkansas joined the SEC, the series is now tied 30-30.
