Arkansas Falls to Mississippi State, 75-66

FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas women’s basketball (11-16, 0-12 SEC) was overpowered by Mississippi State’s (18-8, 5-7 SEC) hot shooting in a 75-66 loss inside Bud Walton Arena on Monday night.

The Hogs missed their first nine attempts from the field and never climbed out of the early 13-point deficit.

First Quarter – 10-18

  • Arkansas won the tip for the second straight game but traveled on its first possession. Mississippi State’s Favour Nwaedozi scored the first points of the game, a put-back layup.
  • The Bulldogs opened on a 13-0 run with three threes.
  • The Hogs missed their first nine field goals before Bonnie Deas made a layup at the 5:26 mark.
  • Mississippi State was called for an offensive foul on the next possession and Arkansas capitalized with a layup from Taleyah Jones.
  • Maria Anais Rodriguez checked in and scored four straight to cut it to 18-8 with 1:16 to play.
  • Arkansas ended the quarter with a pair of free throws from Jones to make it an eight-point game. Anais Rodriguez got a steal on Mississippi State’s final possession.
  • Nwaedozi led all scorers with eight points in the first.

Second Quarter – 24-37

  • Arkansas started the quarter with the ball but Anais Rodriguez missed two attempts inside the paint.
  • Jones had another layup for the first points of the quarter.
  • The Bulldogs added another trio of threes to jump out to a 15-point lead at the 5:07 mark.
  • Arkansas went on a nearly seven-minute field goal drought (0-10) throughout the second quarter.
  • Mississippi State added two more threes to lead 34-18 at the 1:27 mark.
  • Jones ended the drought with a layup but missed the free throw to complete the three-point play.
  • Ware spun around to hit a layup and close the quarter.
  • The Bulldogs totaled eight threes in the first half, two over their season average for a game.
  • Arkansas was 0-9 from beyond the arc.
  • The Razorbacks only had four points off of Mississippi State’s 12 turnovers.

Third Quarter – 46-56

  • Arkansas started the half with the ball and Deas missed a three on its first possession.
  • Mississippi State hit two more threes in the first two minutes of the third quarter.
  • The Bulldogs took a 21-point lead at the 6:40 mark with a layup from Jaylah Lampley.
  • Emily Robinson ended the Hogs’ drought from three with her first points of the game at the 6:03 mark. Arkansas was 0-13 from three before Robinson’s make.
  • The Hogs made five of their last six field goals to close the half and cut Mississippi State’s lead to 10.
  • The Razorbacks outscored Mississippi State 22-19 in the third.

Fourth Quarter – 66-75

  • The Bulldogs opened the quarter with their 12th three-pointer of the game.
  • The Hogs’ offense stalled in the first few minutes, with only two points.
  • Mississippi State led 68-53 with five minutes to play.
  • Robinson hit a three out of the media timeout and Jones hit a three at 2:27 to make it a nine-point game.
  • Arkansas outscored the Bulldogs 20-19 in the fourth quarter.

Game Notes

  • Mississippi State’s 14 threes were its most in a game this season, and the most Arkansas has allowed in a game this season.
  • The Hogs racked up an SEC play-high 15 steals.
  • Arkansas scored 19 points off Mississippi State’s 22 turnovers.
  • Three Razorbacks finished in double-figures: Jones (18), Deas (10) and Robinson (10).
  • Jones has collected 21 10-plus point games this season. She’s led Arkansas in scoring 15 times this season.
  • Deas led the Hogs in rebounding for the 20th time this season with six.
  • Lampley led the Bulldogs with 16 points. Nwaedozi added her 12th double-double on the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hogs will host No. 4 Texas on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 6:30 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 25, but winter weather postponed it to each team’s bye game.
