Arkansas Falls to SMU in ACC/SEC Challenge

DALLAS – Arkansas women’s basketball (7-3) dropped its second straight game, a 78-63 loss at SMU (4-5) in the ACC/SEC Challenge.

The Hogs outrebounded the Mustangs, 55-41, and collected a season-high 25 offensive boards, but were plagued by missed layups and finished the game 8-28 from the paint.

First Quarter – 10-11

  • SMU controlled the tip and Tyi Skinner hit a three to open the game.
  • Bonnie Deas’ step-back jumper got the Hogs on the board in the opening minute.
  • Wyvette Mayberry’s layup at the 7:52 mark gave Arkansas its first lead at 4-3.
  • The Hogs opened the game on a 7-0 run.
  • Arkansas led 7-3 and did not score for 2:19 leading up to the media timeout.
  • Deas collected five rebounds in the first five minutes of the game.
  • SMU ended its five-minute drought with a layup from Sahnya Jah.
  • The Razorbacks ended the quarter on a 3:21 scoring drought but Maryn Archer made a free throw in the final second to cut it to 11-10.
  • Arkansas shot just 17% (4-23) from the field and 25% (1-4) from the free-throw line in the first quarter.

Second Quarter – 26-36

  • SMU opened with a 7-0 run to jump out to an 18-10 lead.
  • Harmonie Ware ended the run with a jumper at the 8:51 mark.
  • Arkansas hit back-to-back threes from Ware and Jada Bates to cut the Mustangs’ lead to 20-18 at the 5:54 mark.
  • The Razorbacks pulled ahead on a 9-0 run, capped off with a layup from Jones.
  • SMU ended the half on a 7-0 run, a 13-2 run over the last four minutes, to take a 10-point lead into the break.
  • Arkansas improved from the field and shot 42.9% (6-14) in the second quarter but the Mustangs finished 11-19 (57.9%). The Razorbacks finished the first half 1-14 on layups.
  • Ware led the Hogs with six points at the half.

Third Quarter – 52-60

  • Jones scored Arkansas’ first points of the second half, a layup.
  • Deas picked up her third foul in the first minute of the quarter.
  • The Hogs trailed by 14 points midway through the third quarter.
  • Arkansas fired off an 8-0 run to cut SMU’s lead to 52-48 on a heat check three-pointer from Jenna Lawrence, who entered double figures.
  • The Mustangs responded with a 6-0 run and took a 60-52 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • Arkansas outscored SMU, 26-24, in the third, the only quarter the Hogs won.

Fourth Quarter – 63-78

  • SMU led by as many as 15 points before the end of the fourth.
  • Wyvette Mayberry made four straight free throws to cut it to 11 points at the 5:40 mark.
  • Both teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes following Mayberry’s free throws until Ware made a layup with under three minutes to play.
  • Deas and Ashlynn Chlarson fouled out.
  • The Mustangs closed the game on a 6-0 run.

Game Notes

  • Arkansas was held to 26 points in the first half for the second straight game.
  • The Hogs shot 66.7% (12-18) from the free-throw line.
  • Arkansas’ 25 offensive rebounds were the most since the 2018-19 season.
  • The Razorbacks were held under 30% from the field for the first time this season. Arkansas finished 22-76 (28.9%) and missed 20 layups.
  • Five Hogs finished in double-figures: Ware (14), Lawrence (13), Jones (11), Mayberry (10) and Deas (14 rebounds).
  • SMU’s Sahnya Jah led all scorers with 22 points without a three-pointer.
