Arkansas Knocks Off Defending WNIT Champion
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Sparked by a disruptive defensive effort, the University of Arkansas women’s basketball team outscored South Dakota 22-11 in the third quarter and used that advantage to knock off the defending WNIT Champions, 70-67, on Thursday night in Bud Walton Arena.
Arkansas runs its record to 3-0 for the second time in three seasons under head coach Jimmy Dykes and also snapped South Dakota’s eight-game winning streak, the second longest streak in the nation.
Five Razorbacks scored in double figures, led by Jessica Jackson with 14 points. Alecia Cooley and Malica Monk added 12 points each, while Briunna Freeman and Jailyn Mason had 10 points each. The Razorbacks, while allowing South Dakota (2-1) to shoot 56.8 percent from the field, scored 24 points off 21 South Dakota turnovers.
Arkansas concludes its four-game home stand against Stetson on Monday.

Trailing 31-27, Arkansas went on an 11-2 run midway through the third quarter, taking a 38-31 lead at the under-five media timeout. The Razorbacks carried that momentum though the rest of the quarter to take a 49-39 lead into the fourth frame. Malica Monk came up with three of her career-high four steals during the 4:56 spurt.
Key Play
South Dakota had pulled to within five, 59-54, in the fourth quarter when Alecia Cooley blocked a shot on the defensive end, which led to a corner 3-pointer for Bailey Zimmerman to push the lead to 62-54 with 3:09 left in the game.

Arkansas forced 21 turnovers, coming up with a season-high 12 steals and scoring 24 points off those miscues. The 21 turnovers also tied a season high for South Dakota. Arkansas forced seven turnovers and came up with seven steals during the third quarter, during which they outscored South Dakota 22-11.

• South Dakota is the first of four Arkansas nonconference opponents, and 14 opponents overall, that played in the postseason in 2015-16.

When we win the turnover battle by 10 (11-21) and the rebounding battle by 12 (33-21), it’s hard (for South Dakota) to win on the road.”
