Arkansas Splits Saturday Doubleheader

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas men’s tennis team split its doubleheader on Saturday, falling to No. 18 Oklahoma 5-2, before topping UMKC 6-1.
In the first match of the day, Arkansas quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point against the Oklahoma Sooners. On court one, Oscar Mesquida and his partner Adam Sanjurjo handed the 33rd-ranked duo of Spencer Papa and Jake Van Emburgh their second loss of the season, 6-3. The match was immediately followed by a 6-3 victory on court three by Jose Alonso and Alex Reco over Jochen Bertsch and Max Stewart.
Arkansas would drop courts two and one in singles to fall behind 2-1 as the Sooners took their first lead of the match. Two hard-fought matches on courts three and four clinched the match for Oklahoma as the Sooners got their fourth point on court four as Jochen Bertsch (OU) def. Pedro Dominguez Alonso, 6-4, 7-5.
Courts five and six each went to the tiebreaking third set, as Jose Dominguez Alonso def. Max Stewart (OU) 5-7, 7-6(3), 1-0(6) to give Arkansas its only singles point in the match.
In the second match of the evening, the Razorbacks swept the Kangaroos of UMKC 7-0. The match began with a win from Mesquida/Sanjurjo over Stride/Giraldo (UMKC) 6-2. The doubles point was clinched on court two with a dominating 6-1 victory from Verboven/Paya over Clark/O’Connor (UMKC).
In singles action, Arkansas would take a 3-0 lead as Mesquida and Verboven would take courts three and one in sequence. The match would be clinched on court four as Pedro Dominguez Alonso def. Neil O’Connor 6-4, 6-1.
The Razorbacks return to action March 1 to open Southeastern Conference play at home against South Carolina.
