Arkansas T5; Daly II T3 After 36 Holes at Bearcat
CINCINNATI – Arkansas carded a 4-under-par 280 in round one Monday and was in second, but was 5-over in the afternoon and slipped into a tie for fifth after 36 with a 1-over total of 569 at the Bearcat Invitational, played at Cincinnati’s Coldstream Country Club.
Host Cincinnati leads the 18-team field with a 14-under-par 554.
The Razorbacks were led by John Daly II. The senior is tied for third with a 36-hole score of 138 (-4). He birdied his first two holes and made the turn in the opening round at -3 after a birdie on hole 8. He dropped a shot on 12 but rallied with birdies on holes 14 and 15 for a 4-under 67 in the morning session. In the afternoon, he was bogey-free with four birdies through 10 holes and stood atop the leaderboard at -8. However, Daly bogeyed four holes down the stretch and settled for an even-par 71.
Willie Gordon and Erick Fortlage are tied for 33rd with a 2-over-par 144.
Gordon, the freshman from Hot Springs, shook off a double bogey on his second hole in his collegiate debut with four birdies over a 10-hole span to turn in a 1-under 70 in the morning. He had 14 pars in the afternoon and turned in a 3-over 74. Fortlage offset three bogeys with three birdies to shoot an even-par 71 in the morning and had 16 pars with two bogeys for a 2-over 73 in the afternoon.
Cam Smith tied Daly with the most birdies on Monday with nine and is tied for 43rd (72-73=145 / +3). Niilo Maki-Petaja is tied for 56th. He had a 75 in the morning and had the team’s second-best round in the afternoon session with a 72 for a 5-over 147.
The third and final round is set for Tuesday with 18 holes.
