Arkansas Takes Down Reigning Canadian College Champion Carleton, 98-58

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Arkansas got a triple-double from Jordan Smith Jr. and Jeremiah Wilkinson sank five triples to lead the Razorbacks to a 98-58 win over Carleton University Saturday night in the Baha Mar Summer League.

Carleton is located in Ottawa, Ontario, and won its 18th Canadian national collegiate championship this past season.

Smith scored 20 points, going 9-of-14 from the field, and added 11 assists and 11 rebounds with four steals and just one turnover.

Wilkinson, who only played about five and a half minutes in game one after leaving with an injury, returned to the starting lineup and delivered 16 first-half points and finished with 26, making 7-of-12 shots from the field – including 5-of-9 from 3-point range – and going 7-of-9 at the free throw line.

JJ Andrews added 17 points and six rebounds while Abdou Toure had 15 points and Caleb Ourigoou contributed 10 points.

Arkansas trailed 5-2 early and was just up 24-21 with 7:48 left in the first half. The Hogs finished the half on a 27-3 run, including a deep 2-point jumper at the buzzer from Smith for a 51-27 lead at the break.

The Ravens put three players in double digits with Augustus Brazdeikis leading the way with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Arkansas will be off Sunday and returns to action on Monday (Aug. 3) versus  Toros del Valle, a team that won the top professional level in Colombia. Tipoff is set for 6 pm (ET)/5 pm ( CT).‘

FIRST HALF: ARK: 51 – CAR: 27

  • Carleton scored first and it was a close game for the first 12 minutes of the game. However, Arkansas used several runs over the final 7:48 to take a commanding lead, outscoring the Ravens 27-3.
  • Down 5-2, Arkansas’ first run was a 9-0 spurt to take an 11-5 advantage, a lead the Hogs would not surrender.
  • With 7:48 left, Carleton was just down 24-21. The Hogs used a 10-0 run to lead 34-21. Then, an 8-0 run as part of a 21-5 spurt with 1:19 left put the Hogs up 45-26.
  • Overall, Arkansas closed the first half with a 14-1 run over the final 4:02, including a jumper just inside the 3-point line by Jordan Smith Jr. at the buzzer to lead 51-27.
  • Arkansas got off to a slow start but finished the half shooting 58.3% from the field (21-of-36) and 58.3% from 3-point range (7-of-12).
  • On the defensive end, Arkansas held Carleton to 29.4% shooting from the field (10-of-34) and 29.4% from 3-point range (5-of-17).
  • Arkansas dished out 16 assists on 21 made baskets, including six from Jordan Smith and four from Billy Richmond III.
  • Arkansas had 7 dunks compared to 10 made field goals by Carleton.
  • Jeremiah Wilkinson was 4-of-5 from 3-point range and led the Hogs with 16 points. Jordan Smith Jr. added 14 points and a team-best seven rebounds.
  • Augustus Brazdeikis led Carleton with 8 points and five rebounds.

SECOND HALF: ARK: 47 – CAR: 31

  • Both teams made five 3-pointers. Arkansas was 5-of-14 and Carleton was 5-of-18.
  • While Arkansas won the overall rebound battle (48-37), Carleton had 20 boards in the second half compared to 24 by Arkansas.
  • JJ Andrews led the Hogs with 13 second-half points and five second-half rebounds.

  • Carleton controlled the opening tip.
  • Carleton’s Tyler Brown scored the first points of the game, a jumper in the lane at 19:07. Arkansas immediately answered with a Jordan Smith Jr. dunk at 18:56.
