Arkansas off to best start in program history
FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas softball team is off to the best start in program history with a 10-2 record. In addition, the Lady Razorbacks received a vote in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Poll released today.
“I’m thrilled for our players for the vote in the poll, and I’m really proud of the way our ladies are playing,” said head coach Jamie Pinkerton. “It’s a reward for their hard work all summer and through the preseason.”
The Lady’Backs came out on top of their last two tournaments in Texarkana, Ark., and Minneapolis, Minn.
Sophomore Jessica Bachkora and junior Kayla Johnson were named to the all-tournament team at the Metrodome Classic this past weekend for their outstanding play. Bachkora hit .350 while Johnson batted .318. Both Lady’Backs tallied seven hits.
Senior pitcher Katy Henry is undefeated on the mound, going 7-0. She pitched four complete games striking out 34 batters and posting a 1.88 earned run average.
The Lady’Backs lead the Southeastern Conference with 13 home runs. Sophomores Miranda Dixon and Sandra Smith each have a league-high four home runs.
“We know it’s a long season and we know we need to keep our focus,” said Pinkerton. “When we do the little things right, the wins will take care of themselves. We have to continue doing what we’re doing and keep getting better.”
Arkansas’ home opener is Thursday, Feb. 21 against Northern Colorado at 3 p.m.
