Campbell Wins Gold at Jamaican National Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Arkansas senior Kemoy Campbell is the 2015 Jamaican National Champion in the 5,000 meter run dominating the country’s best by more than a full minute to take the gold. With his win, Campbell, who already had met the IAAF standard with his time of 13:20.39 at the Payton Jordan Invitational qualified to represent the national team this August at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, China.

The 2015 SEC indoor and outdoor champion at 5,000 meters Campbell posted a time of 13:51.34 to win the event at Independence Park. The Kingston, Jamaica native had a comfortable lead during the race with the second finisher crossing line behind him at 15:22.86. Campbell who received All-America honors for his efforts at the NCAA championships is the Razorbacks first qualifier for the 2015 World Championships.

Arkansas freshmen Jeff Rogers and Sam Kempka led the Razorbacks into the day’s junior competition. A 6kg/13.22lb shot was used for event. Both first time qualifiers Kempka finished seventh in flight one with a mark of 18.10m/59-4.75. Rogers who qualified for the event with the collegiate 7.26kg/16lb shot and mark of 16.39m/53-9.25 fouled all three of his attempts in the circle.

Brandon Workman also competed in the field for Arkansas qualifying for the USA Juniors long jump. The 2014 Arkansas Track Athlete of the Year, was off to a strong start getting on the board to mark 7.35m/24-1.5 moving him into second place.

“You know, honestly, I felt decent on that jump. I knew I had more left in me and knew I could hit a further mark,” Workman said regarding his opening jump.

Workman improved by 4.75in in the final round finishing in fourth place.

NCAA 3,000-meter steeplechase runner-up Stanley Kebenei was the final student-athlete to compete for the Razorbacks. Kebenei coasted to an easy automatic qualification to Sunday’s final finishing second in heat one with a time of 8:41.16.
