Carey McLeod earns SEC Field Athlete of the Week honor
BIRMINGHAM – One attempt was all Carey McLeod needed to win the triple jump event at the Arkansas Qualifier and his mark of 53 feet, 9 inches (16.38) was the top collegiate mark for the weekend, earning him a SEC Field Athlete of the Week honor.
In the competition at Randal Tyson Track Center, which will host the SEC Indoor Championships this weekend, McLeod had nearly a two-foot gap to the runner-up mark of 51-10.5 (15.81).
Over the weekend the second-best mark behind McLeod’s 53-9 was a 52-1.75 (15.89).
For the indoor season McLeod moved to No. 7 on the 2023 collegiate list in the triple jump. The top 16 marks qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Leading the collegiate triple jump list this season is Razorback freshman Jaydon Hibbert with an effort of 54-10.75 (16.73).
McLeod, the defending SEC Indoor long jump champion, also currently ranks No. 4 in the long jump with a 26-6.5 (8.09), behind teammate and defending national champion Wayne Pinnock, who ranks No. 3 with a 26-7 (8.10).
The last time Arkansas swept the SEC Indoor long jump and triple jump titles occurred in 2016 with Jarrion Lawson winning the long jump and Clive Pullen claiming the triple jump.
