Cartwright Excels in Four-Set Loss at LSU
BATON ROUGE, La. – Sophomore Maggie Cartwright recorded 16 kills on 37 attempts and committed just two errors on Friday afternoon in Arkansas’ four-set loss to LSU in Baton Rouge (25-23, 24-26, 25-21, 25-21). Arkansas falls to 11-5 and LSU improves to 4-8.
Cartwright’s season-best 16 kills and career-best .378 hitting percentage helped the Razorbacks stay afloat for a majority of the match, but the Tigers’ offense was too strong down the stretch for Arkansas to stifle.
The Razorbacks did post their fourth-consecutive, double-digit blocking performance of the spring in the loss, led by seniors Liz Pamphile and Devyn Wheeler who contributed five blocks apiece.
Arkansas found themselves trailing one set to none for the second day in a row and continued the trend with a second-set win (26-24) over LSU. The Hogs used an impressive .324 hitting percentage in the second set to even the score.
It was a match of runs for both teams, as Arkansas and LSU traded runs of three to four points back-and-forth all afternoon. Overall, the match saw 28 tie scores and 15 lead changes.
Freshman Taylor Head posted her second-straight double-double and 11th of the season, recording 10 kills and 13 digs for Arkansas. Juniors Gracie Ryan and Lauren Evans did their best in aiding the Razorback defense as well, finishing with 13 and 15 digs, respectively.
Sophomore Jillian Gillen was a crucial part of the Razorback attack with her 13th double-digit kill performance of the season. Gillen not only had 16 kills, but also added nine digs and four blocks to the stat sheet.
Arkansas returns home to Fayetteville after splitting the series with LSU to rest up during a much-needed bye week. The Hogs jump back into their spring slate on March 5-6 at Florida.
