Deas Sets Freshman Rebounding Record in Win Over Kansas City

FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas women’s basketball (10-3) entered double-digit wins territory with a 92-77 victory over Kansas City (2-9) on Wednesday night in Bud Walton Arena.

Freshman Bonnie Deas set the Arkansas freshman single-game rebounding record with 16 boards, her seventh game with double-digit rebounds this season.

Senior Taleyah Jones led all scorers with 24 points in her first game back after missing two games due to concussion protocol.

First Quarter – 23-22

  • Arkansas controlled the tip and Bonnie Deas hit a jumper to open the scoring.
  • Wyvette Mayberry started 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from beyond the arc.
  • Kansas City went four for its last five headed into the first quarter media timeout. Arkansas led 13-10.
  • Taleyah Jones checked in after the timeout, her first appearance since the game at SMU on Dec. 4.
  • The Roos hit a buzzer-beater three to cut Arkansas lead to one point, 23-22.
  • Deas led the way with 5 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
  • Arkansas went 3-4 from three in the first quarter.

Second Quarter – 53-36

  • Arkansas started the second quarter on an 8-0 run despite three early turnovers. Kansas City missed its first five shots.
  • Jones entered double figures with a three at the 6:32 mark.
  • The Hogs closed the quarter on a 12-2 run.
  • Three Razorbacks finished in double figures after the first half: Lawrence (11 points), Jones (10 points) and Mayberry (10 points).
  • Arkansas shot 57% (21-37) from the field in the first half, compared to Kansas City’s 52% (15-29).

Third Quarter – 72-58

  • The Hogs got off to a slower start in the second half and missed their first four shots
  • Kansas City started the third on a 9-0 run and cut Arkansas’ lead to eight points before Maria Anais Rodriguez ended the drought at the 6:51 mark.
  • The Roos started 6-7 from the field.
  • Arkansas responded with a 13-0 run towards the end of the quarter and pushed its lead to 14.
  • The Hogs finished the quarter 2-10 from the field for their fewest points (19) in a quarter tonight.

Fourth Quarter – 92-77

  • The Hogs picked up five fouls in the first 3 minutes of the quarter, with two on Deas.
  • Kansas City opened the quarter on a 10-2 run and cut Arkansas’ lead to 6 points with 7 minutes left.
  • Emily Robinson and Mayberry hit back-to-back threes to put the Hogs back up by double digits with five minutes to play.
  • Jones passed the 20-point mark with buckets with three minutes to play.
  • Arkansas was held scoreless for the final 2:46.

Game Notes

  • Arkansas’ 53 points in the first half were the most in a first half this season and the second most in a half this season.
  • The Razorbacks tallied 17 steals, the most in a game this season.
  • Deas’s 16 rebounds are the third most nationally in a game by a freshman this season. She’s just the third player this season (all classes) and the second Razorback in program history to have at least 14 points, 16 rebounds and 7 assists in a single game.
  • Deas nearly recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 16 rebound and 7 assists.
  • Arkansas finished 13-14 (92.9%) from the free-throw line, the first game shooting over 85% this season.
  • The Hogs matched last year’s win total with their 10th win of the season.
  • The Razorbacks improved to 7-0 over the Roos all-time.
