Duo of Hogs Bring Home Hardware from ITA Regionals

Five members of the Arkansas women’s tennis team competed this past weekend at the ITA Central Regional in Norman, Okla.

Play started on Oct. 16 when Alex Panagiotidou and Jimena Gomez picked up a combined three singles wins. Two Hogs doubles pairs had wins as well, Arina Babenko and Katarina Pavlechova (8-6) and J. Gomez and Panagiotidou (8-4).

On day two of the tournament, three Razorbacks combined for four wins. In singles, No. 38 Carolina Gomez defeated Throdora Chantava, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 and Pavlechova defeated Gian Octa 6-4, 6-2. During doubles, No. 78 C. Gomez and Anet Koskel won twice, 8-5 and 8(7)-7(3).

The Razorbacks’ success continued on day three with seven wins total. C. Gomez, J. Gomez, Koskel and Pavlechova racked up the victories in singles competition and in doubles, C. Gomez and Koskel defeated Salakthip Ounmang and Mika Buchnik, 8-2.

On day four in doubles, the pair of  C. Gomez and Anet Koskel defeated Julia Garcia Ruiz and Barakat Quadre, 3-6, 6-4, [11]-[9]. In singles, C. Gomez defeated Ashlee Narker, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5. These wins advanced C. Gomez and Koskel to the finals of the doubles bracket, and C. Gomez to the semifinals of the singles bracket.

The final day of the regional was all Hogs. C. Gomez and Koskel won 6-4, 6-3, which made them outright doubles champions of the event and qualified them for the NCAA Championships later this fall. C. Gomez then defeated Barakat Quadre, 6-0, 6-1 in singles, which secured her spot at NCAA Championships in singles and was good for co-champion of the Central Regional.
